It tells the loose story of Nicky Pardo, a retired hitman who’s discovered salvation through faith. He starts his days with ritualistic Russian roulette and, if the bullet doesn’t claim his life, he spends the rest of his waking hours putting boot to criminal ass. The entirety of Redeemer plays out like a real life version of Los Dias Y Las Noches de Monsignor Martinez, the fictional show seen in episodes of King of the Hill about a Spanish Catholic priest who doubles as a mercenary. The parallels were too on-the-nose for me to ignore. However, Redeemer more closely resembles The Boondock Saints with its loose religious narrative tying up a film that’s more or less action for the sake of action. A righteous warrior spending his days gambling with his own life and grappling with the forces of evil is all the plot anyone needs to justify action for the sake of action.

The majority of the film follows Nicky Pardo as he pursues a gang that torments a village. Deeper elements of the film are about The Scorpion, a man who once left Nicky for dead in the desert with nothing more than a revolver and a single bullet. Specifically, the same bullet Nicky gambles with on the daily. Without spoiling the minimal story elements that come into play, all I can say is that the film’s narrative sits on the bench while the beautifully choreographed fighting takes center stage. Pardo, the Redeemer himself, is played by Chilean actor, and fight choreographer, Marko Zaror. Western audiences may recognize him from such releases as Machete Kills, From Dusk ‘Til Dawn: The Series, The Defenders, Alita: Battle Angel or John Wick: Chapter 4. However, the real Chilean star power here comes from Ernesto Diaz Espinoza, the writer and director who gave the world its first ever Chilean action film, Kiltro, in 2006. With action oriented creators both in front of the camera and behind it, there’s nothing but melodramatic storytelling and pulse pounding action on the screen.

It’s almost too easy to find the story of the film unintentionally amusing as you watch Nicky Pardo fight his way toward salvation through neo-nazis, rapists, drug dealers, and otherwise generic scumbags. When you sit down for a viewing of Redeemer you’ve done so for one reason and one reason only; to watch the “good guy” beat the ever loving Hell out of the bad guys. This is where Redeemer shines, as Pardo releases a series of justice not often seen outside of a Punisher film. Reminiscent of old school westerns that follow a troubled and mysterious man who enters a small town and “cleans the streets”, Redeemer feels familiar yet appropriately fresh. Feeling a lot like a John Wayne type put down his revolver and started learning how to grapple, Redeemer is bare bones “good vs. evil” in the most enjoyable way possible. Never slipping into the mundane, the film is a perpetual series of pulled teeth, broken bones, and well matched fights that make the UFC look like the WWE.

Reviews for the film drastically vary online, with only a specific audience really appreciating it for what it is. When you watch xXx you don’t expect Vin Diesel to deliver any award winning speeches, just like how you don’t watch The Expendables because you like the character development. Action films are meant to be pure escapism and Redeemer hits that nail right on the head with aggressive conviction. The ride is amusing, the fights are enticing, and the ending is the right kind of rewarding. There’s no real way to tell you why without spoiling an otherwise thin narrative. While I recommend Redeemer for the thrill, I can’t exactly suggest it to those looking for a movie with any sort of deep meaning. This makes it the perfect film for a social gathering, or to have on while you’re enjoying a snack and winding down for the night. For those of you looking for something outside the world of Stathams, Chans, and Shwarzeneggers, you can find Redeemer streaming on Amazon PRIME. For me, I’m welcoming Redeemer to my ever growing wall of physical movies where it’ll be right at home in my Action section.

A former hit man seeks atonement through a mix of Russian roulette and ridding the world of the criminal elements he encounters in this Chilean action film.

[12
58,3034,3997,3998,3973,3991,3999
post-52400","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-action","tag-action-film","tag-chile","tag-chilean","tag-foreign-film","tag-mma","tag-spanish
["GET
