Geek culture is huge now, and every network is aiming to market on the fact that the fan boys and pop culture buffs really dominate the scope of fiction and media right now. Syfy has tried time and again with varied results, and so far “Heroes of Cosplay” (a kind of spin off of the cosplaying portion of “Comic Con Episode IV”) is the best, and most entertaining.

Though “Heroes of Cosplay” is mainly just a reality show first and foremost, about sixty percent of the show is devoted to the intricacies of cosplay, and how this simple hobby means a lot to the people that practice it. For some it’s a means of building a portfolio to enter in to Hollywood, and for others, it’s a way of building a business. Refreshingly, the series mostly revolves around women and their efforts to build costumes, and their attempts to win prizes at the major conventions in the country. The show has yet to stage anything very melodramatic yet, but there was one instance of controversy recently where professional cosplayer Yaya Han was accused of claiming larger people couldn’t cosplay. In a moment of accidental (or tricky?) editing, a host of a Nerdist cosplaying show sits in a round table of cosplayers trying to figure out why it’s taken so seriously by these women.

Yaya Han insists that cosplaying should be taken seriously, and there’s an instance where one of the professional cosplayers insists a heavy fan boy or fan girl shouldn’t dress up as a fit hero or character like Superman or Wonder Woman. The editing was fixed to where it seemed Yaya offered the declaration, thus she was given some considerably bad press. She had to later deny ever saying such things on her Facebook page, and some fans even came to her defense. It’s very likely Yaya never even made such an implication since the show paints her as very professional, demure, and soft spoken for the most part. That said, “Heroes of Cosplay” is thankfully free of cat fights and loud arguments, and is more based around the dramatic side of cosplay.

Yaya Han, the gorgeous and sexy grand poobah of the sub-culture, is a consistent presence who hovers around these contests, serving as judge for most of the pageants. All the while, the show revolves around a changing roster of mostly female cosplayers, many of whom spend thousands of dollars on the hobby, and hope to use the pageants as a means of jump starting fashion and prop making careers independent of their 9-5 jobs. There’s a lot of looks at the odds and ends of making costumes, the material that goes in to them, and the characters based under the suits.

The most interesting sub-plots of the series so far has been the chemistry between cosplaying team Jessica and Holly and how their personalities clash whenever they work together or against one another in a pageant. There’s also the episode where Yaya tries to convince a former protege to approach her costumes with more detail and professionalism as opposed to skimpy and sexy like her friend and fellow cosplayer Jessice Nigri. Since this is mainly a reality show, some scenes will be staged and there will likely be an alpha bitch cosplayer down the road who takes the cosplaying too seriously, but in its current form “Heroes of Cosplay” is a fun little diversion that touches on a much too ignored hobby that’s often rife with creativity.

Airing on Syfy.
