In a world of adaptations, sequels, and cobbled together cliches, an original narrative is a breath of fresh air. Writer / Director Michael Pickle has just that, a completely fresh take on the trope of being able to see dead people. The Dead Place follows high school student, Isaac, as he struggles with his ability to see the lost souls of the recently deceased. Whether it’s his grandma meandering around her own funeral service, or complete strangers looking to reconnect with the living, Isaac does his best to ignore the spirits. However, this film is far from a “Sixth Sense” knock-off. When a serial killer meets his demise, and accepts the offer of a malevolent spirit that allows him to continue his terror from beyond the grave, Isaac’s problems with wandering ghosts is thrust into chaos. Can he handle the only spirit he’s ever known to be able to speak and physically react to the world around it, or will Isaac fall victim to the same insidious force that allows it to roam the earth?

Our film’s lead is played by Idris Veliu, who stars in his first ever full length feature role. Coming from a small run of appearances in television, Idris portrays a troubled teen with an appropriate approach. Often moody, sometimes snarky, and all around stressed out… Idris’ performance feels appropriate for a first time horror lead in a modest indie thriller. While his acting may not stick the landing for a large-scale outing, he definitely kept me interested in his character and I look forward to anything he may do in the future. That isn’t to say that The Dead Place is a complete amateur hour, though. Isaac’s main antagonist comes in the form of “The New Kid”, the wandering spirit of a murderer played by horror icon David Howard Thornton. The man needs almost no introduction thanks to his successful run as Art the Clown in the Terrifier franchise. We find him in a rare speaking role this time, delivering some fairly entertaining moments that often reinvigorated my interest in the story. Thornton’s performance in The Dead Place is a solid example as to why he’s absolutely perfect for his dream role over at DC as The Joker. After seeing him as a clown, and now hearing him sling macabre jokes before tossing out some wicked laughter, I’m hoping the man gets it.

The Dead Place has the kind of charm reminiscent of straight-to-VHS horror offerings of days gone. With camera work that makes the film feel like a personal project instead of a cinematic outing. The music appears to be handcrafted for the movie itself, and the practical effects are a labor of love. That said, don’t step into The Dead Place expecting a high budget offering or anything too incredible. Certain visual assets stand out against an otherwise grounded presentation, a few scenes could have benefited from re-shoots, and at least one ghost actor commits the cinema sin of looking directly at the camera before having their eyes dart away to get back in character. However, all of these flaws can be overlooked by die hard horror fanatics who dig beneath the surface to find gems worth exploring. For example, the evil entity that drives the spirit of the killer is played by Bill Oberst Jr., who played Papa Corn in the horror film Circus of the Dead. This means “Art” is being powered by another hyper-violent horror film clown. Horror fans may also recognize Angel Nichole Bradford, who has quite the resume full of horror gems growing. Fans can also keep their eyes peeled for someone’s personal horror film lineup that manages to get screen time. I won’t lie, I paused and compared the collection to my own and took notes about what I was missing. A keen eye might also catch a reference to Michael Pickle’s acclaimed horror short, Stab Awake.

Despite its blatant imperfections, some questionable acting, and a couple of visuals that don’t quite stick the landing… The Dead Place is still something special for horror fans who are looking to watch a fresh narrative while they wait for offerings such as Terrifier 4. For a special viewing, fans can catch The Dead Place theatrical premiere at the Lumiere Cinema in Beverly Hills, CA on Wednesday, June 10th. Attendees include David Howard Thornton, Michael Pickle, Idris Veliu, and Lexi Graves. You can also currently watch The Dead Place on the BloodStreamTV streaming service before it hits video on demand platforms on August 5th.

Isaac is a high school senior who has to deal with bullies, a family that doesn’t quite understand him, and visions of the recently deceased who have yet to move on.

[12
477,2257,1087
post-53337","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-horror","tag-indie","tag-thriller
["GET
