Written and directed by Shunji Iwai, Love Letter is a beautifully sad film\u00a0that is slow-paced in a way that works great for the story at hand.\u00a0The writing here is careful and well done with\u00a0attention to details while giving the audience a lot to think about. The writing here\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0show everything right\u00a0away;\u00a0it guides the viewer into the story, letting them meet the characters and\u00a0make their own opinions of them. There is a\u00a0ton in\u00a0here and analyzing it all for those who want to see the film would be doing them a disservice.\u00a0The writing here is\u00a0solid,\u00a0and the direction is perfectly paired for it. The way Shunji Iwai writes and directs is careful, caring, and open, giving plenty for the viewer to\u00a0observe\u00a0and appreciate while getting hit right in the<\/span> feels.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cast here is lovely, with Miho Nakayama as Itsuki Fujii, the\u00a0recipient\u00a0of the letters\u00a0and\u00a0Emiko Nagata as Harumi, the sender of the letters. The two of them do not really interact face to face, yet they have the most compelling connection of the whole film, giving the viewer two\u00a0characters with\u00a0their own issues finding solace in each other\u2019s distant presence.\u00a0These two bring the viewer in, connect with them, and break their hearts in the\u00a0best\u00a0way. There is something\u00a0just right\u00a0in each performance\u00a0as each\u00a0actress\u00a0makes their character their own, showing up in the right way with the right amount of humanity and nuance. There is a lot in the film for them to go\u00a0through,\u00a0and they really make the most of it and make the film what it is. The supporting cast is also quite good, giving performances that are solid but not\u00a0overshadowing\u00a0the two leads.\u00a0They show what it truly is to\u00a0be supporting\u00a0cast members.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One aspect of Love Letter that cannot be forgotten here is the cinematography by Noboru Shinoda\u00a0which\u00a0is,\u00a0simply put, stunning. This is a film that looks amazing with scenes that take their time while being lit perfectly for the needs of the story in that moment. The framing is also stunning many times throughout the film.\u00a0This is a film made with care on all\u00a0levels,\u00a0and it makes the film\u00a0absolutely beautiful\u00a0to watch.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Love Letter is a carefully crafted, sad film that has the right balance of\u00a0just about everything\u00a0to bring the viewer in\u00a0and lead them slowly to caring about the leads and their situations. This could easily have become an overly\u00a0saccharine\u00a0or overly sad piece about grief but instead, it takes grief straight on and shows multiple versions of it\u00a0while not being condescending or under estimating of how it may hit the viewer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
