Lesbian Space Princess is the first full length feature for Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese, the writers and directors of the animated film. The story follows the misadventure of Saira, a sheltered princess living on planet Clitopolis. Saira lives in the shadow of her high class lesbian queen mothers who want nothing more than for their daughter to be just like them. Eager to forge her own path, Saira falls in love with a bounty hunter named Kiki. She idolizes Kiki for living a life of adventure and being a tough-as-nails individual with overwhelming confidence, the exact opposite of our space princess. Their passionate, two week,relationship comes to a close when Kiki decides she needs to move on from Saira. Distraught over her loss, Saira is given an opportunity to prove that she’s more than just royalty when Kiki is kidnapped by the film’s main antagonists… The Straight White Malians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This Australian release has an art style that’s sure to please Adventure Time and Steven Universe fans. The space journey is full of hilarious anomalies that channel Rick & Morty vibes. However, underneath all of the cartoon flair is a story with a solid message. While there’s plenty of laughs to be had, viewers will see multiple characters face life changing revelations. One moment you’re laughing over a joke about Magic the Gathering cards, the next you find yourself oddly proud of a fictional characters’ personal growth. This is far more than most adult cartoons seem to deliver these days. But make no mistake, this is an adult cartoon. There’s brief nudity, some sexual content, and jokes that just aren’t suitable for a younger audience. So while it may look like something you’d see on Cartoon Network, it’s definitely meant for an older, albeit maybe a little immature, audience.<\/p>\n

Voice talent makes or breaks a cartoon. Sure, visuals can be everything you could possibly ask for, but if the characters don’t sound the part, the film just won’t work. This isn’t a problem for Lesbian Space Princess as everyone delivers heartfelt and passionate performances. Some of the best I’ve experienced in recent cartoons at that. Television actress Shabana Azeez brings Princess Saira to life and is joined by a lively lineup of talent that had a perfect chemistry. Bernie Van Tiel portrays the edgy Kiki the Destroyer while Gemma Chua-Tran voices an upbeat and perpetually optimistic ally named Willow. Mark Samual Bonanno, Zachary Ruane, and Broden Kelly play the Straight White Maliens, atrio that had me laughing in every scene they occupied. My favorite performance has to go to Richard Roxburgh who played a very dry and sarcastic star fairing vessel… The Ship. This lineup of voice actors, paired with the setting in which their characters occupy, often reminded me of Futurama. Everyone brought forth the exact energy a science fiction adult comedy needs, and they each stuck the landing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I may not be the target demographic for a project like Lesbian Space Princess, but I’m definitely happy with the decision I made to watch it. With a vibrant art style, adult themes, and comedy that lands just right, Lesbian Space Princess is one of my favorite viewings of 2026. Lesbian Space Princess may be perfect for Pride Month, but I’ll argue that it has something to offer any “mature\u201d viewer. With 24 hours to save her former lover, Saira’s adventure has a sense of urgency that keeps the film’s pacing steady, with no room for filler. This queer sci-fi comedy thinly veils a deep story about facing the unknown, tackling one’s own self-doubt, and discovering what’s truly important when it comes to love. I’ll be keeping my eyes on Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese moving forward, and I expect great things.<\/p>\n
