High school is traumatic enough without adding the supernatural to the equation. Isaac sees dead people, though his experience is considerably less charming than the one audiences remember from\u00a0The Sixth Sense<\/i>. Isaac has spent years struggling with an ability that allows him to see the dead, isolating him from both his family and classmates. When he experiences further tragedy, he finds himself drawn deeper into darkness. The only person he can turn to is his friend Katharine, who is also a paranormal enthusiast. With a new, sinister force pushing Isaac towards something malevolent, Isaac finds it harder to maintain control.<\/p>\n

Viewers walk into a micro-budget horror film with firm expectations of the limitations involved. In his feature film debut, Michael Pickle manages to achieve much with very little by leaning into the strengths of a micro-budget production. Pickle\u2019s screenplay has a layer of depth to it that is often missing from a lot of low-budget horror. Using high school and teenagers is not a new angle, of course, but focusing on the evil that can grow when someone is isolated and vulnerable is a smart choice when you have less money to spend on special effects. There was also some smart camera work, including the use of drone shots that helped broaden the visual scope of the film without feeling gratuitous.<\/p>\n

Casting in super indie films can be tricky. You want to have some veterans to ground key moments, and you hope that you stumble across some new and promising talent. The audience spends most of their time with Isaac, so you need a young actor with the chops to handle it. Thankfully, they cast Idris Veliu in the role. Veliu gives a grounded and committed performance that remains sympathetic and believable. He displays a maturity and depth that keeps the storytelling honest.<\/p>\n

Yes, that is\u00a0Terrifier\u2019s<\/i>\u00a0David Howard Thornton as \u201cThe New Kid\u201d and yes, in this film, he can talk! Thornton\u2019s brilliance as a physical actor is well known, but it was genuinely nice for him to be able to use his voice, which he wields with the same dexterity he brings to his physical performances. He elevates every scene he is in and enhances the performances of the actors around him. While not every performance stands out to the same degree, that is often true of any horror film, not just the lower budget.<\/p>\n

There were some stumbles. The movie itself is overly long and could have been streamlined. Being more judicious in the editing would have allowed for a tighter and better-paced story. The characters, too, were not as consistently written, particularly the bullies, who were two-dimensional and almost cartoonish. When you\u2019re exploring the struggles of a troubled kid with such nuance, having a bit more attention and detail going into them would have gone a long way toward strengthening the story as a whole.<\/p>\n

The effects, too, were mostly practical, but in one unfortunate scene that gets quite bloody, the CGI blood effects took you out of what is supposed to be an intense moment. The practical effects that are used throughout hit just where they needed to, so the sudden use of CGI was jarring and unnecessary.<\/p>\n

For those horror fans who love and appreciate the passion that goes into lower-budget fare,\u00a0The Dead Place<\/i>\u00a0is one to add to your list. Pickle has done a lot with his feature debut, and if this is an indicator of the love and care he has for the genre, more great things will come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
