\"The_Initiation_Of_Sarah_(20\"<\/a>ABC Family\u2019s \u201cThe Initiation of Sarah\u201d isn\u2019t an awful quasi-horror film, it\u2019s just incredibly weak and bland. It\u2019s never intentionally a very weak film, it\u2019s just so lost in its own attempts to mimic a certain show about yakking women that it can\u2019t find its own niche. What do you expect from a movie whose heroine has sex to prevent from being sacrificed as a virgin? \u201cThe Initiation of Sarah\u201d is like a harder edged \u201cSabrina,\u201d it\u2019s a PG-13 \u201cSuspiria,\u201d and while that\u2019s not always a bad thing, it\u2019s just never interesting enough to warrant my full attention.<\/p>\n

While watching, I found myself interested in accomplishing other tasks like clipping my nails. That\u2019s sad, especially since I take poor care of my nails. Either way, it\u2019s the basic plot. Two girls arrive at college, are pledging sororities, and two are competing for the pledge of Sarah, a \u201crebellious,\u201d and \u201cedgy\u201d girl who isn\u2019t interested in conformity, in spite of her sister\u2019s best efforts to involve her. One consolation is the hot women, but much of that is lost in the muck of semi-fantasy, and utterly lethargic characterization. The writers are so intent on forcing the \u201cpowerful but out of control\u201d heroine type on us so repetitively that it eventually becomes goofy. There are at least three sequences of our character Sarah who lashes out with her powers and runs off in a whiny fit.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t help but laugh thinking back at \u201cNot Another Teen Movie\u201d when our main character is humiliated and just keeps running around crying. But we learn that Sarah is \u201cThe One.\u201dThere\u2019s always a \u201cOne,\u201d isn\u2019t there? There are so many \u201cOne\u2019s\u201d that the whole clich\u00e9 becomes so utterly exhausting, and I could care less what type of \u201cOne\u201d Sarah was. Because this \u201cOne\u201d is not some \u201cOne,\u201d because she\u2019s very unkempt and like so totally Goth and stuff. How can you tell Boorem\u2019s character Sarah is edgy and Goth? She has streaked hair, studded wrist bracelets, talks as if she\u2019s always on the verge of tears, and she\u2019s extremely blas\u00e9 about going to college. They need her blood, I think, to feed an eternal flame that has\u2026 plans or something.<\/p>\n

I was fuzzy on the details. Take a few people from the CW, a few from \u201cThe OC,\u201d and mix them together to make one long weak, bland, and lightweight horror movie for teen girls featuring bitchy characters and a plot that moves at a slug\u2019s pace. Add some forced drama, and Tilly as a hilariously over the top resident evil she-bitch, and you get a horror fantasy for the \u201cGoosebumps\u201d crowd, which is right up ABC Family\u2019s alley. We really didn\u2019t need another \u201cThe Covenant.\u201d You can\u2019t completely go hard on \u201cThe Initiation of Sarah,\u201d I mean it\u2019s not intentionally a sub-par light weight horror effort, it just ends up that way lost in a mist of \u201cGilmore Girls\u201d characterization and diatribes, and suspense on par with R.L. Stine. While I have to support Summer Glau, the film is so cheesy and weak it can\u2019t even stand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
