Written by Dakota Daulby, Harrison Houde, and Rayden\u00a0Wickop, and directed by Harrison Houde, this\u00a0dramedy\u00a0(or drama\u00a0comedy) is one that reaches for the heartstrings and\u00a0pulls on\u00a0them here and there throughout the film. It takes the difficult subject of having to parent a parent as a grown child who has\u00a0likely never\u00a0seen their parent act as a responsible adult.\u00a0The writing here is clearly careful and done with an attention to detail and\u00a0the heart of the matter\u00a0that elevates the film from being a voyeuristic take on addiction into being a deep family drama with some comedy here and there.\u00a0The writing is careful, calculated, yet feels natural, organic even. The direction is solid and works fantastically well with the script and the cast.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cast here is led by\u00a0Dakota Daulby as Joel, the son, and\u00a0Emmanuel Bilodeau\u00a0as Bodo, the father, and\u00a0both of them\u00a0give\u00a0fantastic performances with Bilodeau edging out the best performance of the two with a performance that should earn him awards.\u00a0The work here, from both, sells the story and makes the film one that is easy to get into as you follow these two humans during a difficult time\u00a0in their lives (lives that seem to have been difficult all around). Joining them is Maxim Roy as Lucy, Joel’s\u00a0mother\u00a0and Bodo’s ex.\u00a0She’s\u00a0fantastic here and a strong reminder that this reviewer is getting old as\u00a0she’s\u00a0the mom of a\u00a0full-grown\u00a0adult here. The rest of the cast is peppered with actors most French-Canadians will recognize but most others might not. They all do good to solid work with the parts, medium or small, they have here.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cinematography by Serge Desrosiers shows the Quebec most who do not live there never get to\u00a0see;\u00a0the non-Montreal Quebec, the countryside and his work does so beautifully. This is what\u00a0most of province is\u00a0like, nature, some houses, not so much traffic,\u00a0few humans, and a sense of freedom that comes with the locale. The cinematography here turns the location\u00a0into its own character,\u00a0almost a\u00a0being that is part of the story, adds to the story, and\u00a0educates\u00a0some of the decisions made by the characters.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tight Lettuce (or Tiss\u00e9 Serr\u00e9 in French) is a touching, carefully crafted,\u00a0view into the difficulties of addiction, life in the boonies of a province most never think as having more than cities, and family connections in the middle of it all.\u00a0The film has some funny\u00a0moments but\u00a0is mostly a drama and a really good one at that.\u00a0The writing is more than good, the direction works great with it, the acting is solid, and the cinematography creates the perfect world for it all to evolve and move within.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
