The Yakuza stories we usually see are all about order and respect, keeping things going, traditions, and the underworld of the city the film takes place in. Here, the film is about caring about more than traditions and rules, about more than a tough guy legacy. It’s about finding yourself, finding joy, and letting go of expectations placed upon you by society. The film does all of this in a manner that is entertaining, funny, touching, and inspiring. Yes, even inspiring. The writing is funny and witty, the direction is dynamic, and it all leads into strong performances.

In the lead, Akito Fujii is amazing. The way he helps his character evolve from disenchanted violent gang member to happy, fulfilled dancer is the main appeal here. His work is heavy at times, but light for a lot of the film’s runtime. His performance carries the film, and his screen presence makes everything feel just right. He’s funny, he’s introspective, he makes the film something beyond what good writing and good directing together can. He’s the solid lead that the film needs, and he makes it easy to watch. The rest of the cast is fun, with a mix of Yakuza, former Yakuza, dancers, a dance teacher, and a few others. This film has variety of characters, and all the cast members go for gold with their performances. While these performances a bit much at times, they fit with the story and how things go down.

The film’s cinematography looks good here, it’s simple, doesn’t look to be flashy, it’s there to let the cast and story shine and that it manages really well. The editing works with this and makes the film’s dance scenes more dynamic while keeping the mood light for most of the rest of the film. The pace created here makes it all easy to watch, giving scenes room to breathe when needed and moving on at just the right time. As an extra note, the wardrobe for the lead is freaking great, almost flamboyant in a grandpa sort of way. The sweaters right out of the early 1990s, the shirt for the dance competition with the suit, perfect, and the fact that the everyday wardrobe makes repeat appearances, showing that this man is not one to chase trends and does in fact reuse his clothes (something rare in films for some reason).

Break Free is a fun, touching, entertaining dance film with the least expected lead as a dancer. The way lead Fujii does not take himself too seriously makes most of the humor land just right. This is one fun film with some interesting (in the very least) dance sequences. The fact it pokes fun at social media trends the way it does it just extra in the end.

Fantasia 2026 runs from July 16th to August 2nd, 2026

[2497
219,1304,302,4062
post-54173","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-fantasia-fest","tag-comedy","tag-dance","tag-drama","tag-fantasia-2026
["GET
