Unable to help her on his current income, in a world where rampant A.I. use has eliminated most jobs, Win decides to reach out to a long time friend with wealthy connections. His friend, It, is willing to help on the condition that Win fights for him in an underground fighting tournament. Unlike normal street fights, combatants in this tournament are given tattoos that inject them with microscopic robots that grant their host with an array of abilities, including enhanced strength and speed. The story evolves from there, leading into a journey that feels like it came straight out of a video game.

God Skin is another project by director Paween Purijitpanya that shows a bleak future made worse thanks to the interference of A.I. While this film is a little less on-the-nose about the subject than his earlier work on Netflix’s sci-fi anthology, Tomorrow and I, where artificial intelligence was negatively altering Buddhist faith. This time around, the narrative is far more playful with its delivery. Focusing more on the high intensity fights than the underlying narrative, God Skin is a barrage of special abilities, power ups, health bars, and the kind of characters you’d expect to see in a new Tekken or Street Fighter entry. With a vibrant arena for one-on-one fights, the kind of attire you could expect at an anime convention, and digital “gifts” audience members can send the fighters… God Skin’s tournament is like nothing else previously put into live action. Purijitpanya’s directorial efforts shine bright with each brawl and subsequent emotional follow up. On the surface, we have a rather silly, albeit wildly entertaining, fight fest. Beyond such simplicity, we’re treated to a slowly unraveled mystery, tame levels of body horror, and a story that could make Fight Club blush.

My only issue with God Skin is its aggressive tonal shift in the final act. I find it comparable to Old Boy, where there’s intrigue, suspense, plenty of violence, and then an explanation that feels as though it should have been drip fed to the audience instead of being expanded upon just before the curtains close. Like turning off the lights after watching Dragon Ball Z and then throwing on an episode of Black Mirror to round out your night, you’ll feel like you experienced two different sides of escapism. That isn’t to say that the overall presentation is flawed, but anyone who expected a whimsical journey from start to finish may find themselves a bit put off. Such vibe shifts are often done slowly through episodes of a series, or entries in a long running film franchise. God Skin almost feels as though it matures in real time in front of the viewer, taking you from a land of sci-fi combat and dropping you into a grungy world of crime and deceit. Whether or not this works for the viewer is completely subjective. Once I recovered from the knee-jerk change of tone, I found myself heavily invested in the story’s finale.

I feel as though God Skin will resonate well with people who enjoyed such things as 47 Ronin, The Man with the Iron Fists, or the latest Mortal Kombat offerings. Just don’t expect any gory fatalities. I often ask myself if the projects I review motivate me to explore previous work done by those who presented it. This is always a good indicator as to whether or not the project is worth recommending. Now that I’m over here researching the past projects of Paween Purijitpanya and his long time collaborator / producer, Surawut Tungkharak, it’s clear to me that the film does its job. God Skin stands strong as an entertaining spectacle, and a successful win for Purijitpanya and Tungkharak’s careers. Fantasia Film Festival goers can look forward to a live screening of this totally bonkers battle royale come August 1st. If you’re unable to catch a screening, I recommend adding this title to a list of films to track down at a later date. You won’t regret it.

Fantasia 2026 runs from July 16th to August 2nd, 2026

A delivery boy joins an underground fighting ring in order to pay for his mother’s medical bills in this cyberpunk Muay Thai fantasy from Thailand.

[2497
58,4062,631
post-54210","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-fantasia-fest","tag-action","tag-fantasia-2026","tag-martial-arts
["GET
