Written by\u00a0Eriko Katagiri and Tomoko Shinozuka and directed by the former, When You Open the Door is a quiet, slow moving, piece of life with a twist.\u00a0The film, as\u00a0a whole, feels intentional and is almost pensive.\u00a0The writing is on\u00a0point,\u00a0and the direction pairs perfectly with it, giving the viewer a\u00a0film with\u00a0a clear vision\u00a0that takes its time to\u00a0make itself known to those lucky enough to see it.\u00a0The story here is worth a watch or three to make sure it is absorbed in full.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The cast here is led by\u00a0Serena Motola as\u00a0Miki,\u00a0and this is her movie.\u00a0Her performance is all about subtly and\u00a0small changes\u00a0in expression, showing that less can be more, less can be better. Her performance here pulls you in and rocks you slowly as she moves through the story. Most of her time on screen is calm and quiet, with a few more vivacious scenes that truly give her life and bring the character into a more complete version of itself. The actor playing her boyfriend gives an interesting performance, but stealing the show here is the group of women in the forest, most of whom do not have a single line yet say so much through body movements and facial expressions. These are the ladies you want to learn from; these are the ladies Miki can learn from.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cinematography by\u00a0Akiko Ashizawa gives Motola all the room she needs to evolve, move, and express herself. The camera loves her, and\u00a0Ashizawa\u00a0clearly knows when to let this happen. The lighting is soft most of the time, proper for the\u00a0different locations\u00a0with a few bits where it changes (logically here), giving the film a mood that works with the quiet story and mostly quiet performance from the lead. This is\u00a0a film\u00a0that knows what it wants\u00a0to show and how to show it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With a bit of a tonal shift near the end, When You Open the Door is magnificent, contemplative, with a dark sense of whimsy that works perfectly here. This is a solid\u00a0film\u00a0that better\u00a0get\u00a0a physical media release as it needs to live on this viewer’s shelf.\u00a0When it comes to\u00a0oddity\u00a0cinema, this is the kind of oddity we need more of, not because of its genre or style, but because it takes risks, has a clear vision, and knows how to being the\u00a0viewer\u00a0along for the quiet ride.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
