Coyote sues Acme after decades of defective products in the innovative, hilarious, and slam-bang awesome COYOTE VS. ACME. Dave Green’s nearly lost film finally hits theatres with a bang soon.

Huzzah! Coyote Vs. Acme is finally with us! It’s a shame we were almost denied the opportunity to experience the absolutely brilliant entertainment of David Green’s animation/live-action hybrid. The long story short: the film was set to be deleted as a tax write-off by the CEO of Warner Bros., David Zaslav, along with Batgirl, a Scoob sequel, and another Looney Tunes movie: The Day The Earth Blew Up. Batgirl & Scoob are still MIA (and likely will stay so), but Ketchup Entertainment rescued both of the toon flicks. I loved last year’s release of The Day The Earth Blew Up, but Coyote Vs. Acme is even better, one of the best of this already solid 2026. Hilarious and strangely touching from end-to-end, it’s a spiritual successor to Robert Zemeckis’s 1988 toons-and-humans sharing space comic conspiracy caper, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Importantly, it gets the spirit of the Looney Tunes, earning huge laughs from delivering those characters and their peculiarities in new and interesting ways.

The story setup is a total banger, based on the concept of a 1990 New Yorker article by Ian Frazier (thus the “based on a true story” moniker, but stripping away the detail of toons, and there are so many David vs. Goliath court stories that ARE true). That article was adapted into a story by James Gunn & Jeremy Slater, and fully written into a film by May December’s Samy Burch. It’s ready to use to hang a whole lot of Looney Tunes gags, but also to set up solid characters, great chemistry, strong humor, and an emotional throughline. After a 1992 based opening of toon Dr Lorre (the snively guy who acts and looks like Peter Lorre, of course) coming onto some secret and vanishing to set up the underpinning of the plot, the film gives several minutes of just being a Roadrunner cartoon (and thus setting up the main pull of story) As the title suggests, Wile E. Coyote is suing Acme for so many decades of continually defective products (as noted above, we get a big montage of the best of Roadrunner vs Coyote; including clips of the original cartoons that lifted my heart) sees a billboard featuring low-level claims lawyer Kevin Avery (of Avery, Jones, and Maltese for one of many meta-jokes of the franchise). Of course, so many courtroom flicks and TV have more than just the court, so it’s not much of a surprise that there’s a bigger conspiracy at hand. In that way Coyote vs Acme is more akin to Who Framed Roger Rabbit than the other Looney Tunes movies, where that melded toons to a conspiracy noir, this does to a courtroom. But in a great touch, this is not a world where Tunes are entertainers like in Roger Rabbit, Space Jam, or Back in Action; nor is it just a Looney Tunes story like The Day the Earth Blew Up. Here, the cartoon character are just existing in the world, doing their thing; more akin to the atrocious Tom & Jerry movie from six years ago.

It’s funny how much the real-life situation lines up with film, and I’m not surprised Zaslav side-eyed it for deletion. It’s surprisingly anti-corporate with their meddling, commodification, and using and abusing their users. And it’s about abject failure and pushing past the man putting our heroes down (or deleting for tax reasons, or cancels a whole art division for AI and a few more bucks). Wile E. Coyote and Avery are both continual failures, getting just enough; pushing up against an uphill climb again and again and again. The underdog gives pathos to Avery and our titular “hero”. Damn, do I actually feel for Coyote?

Not only do we feel for Coyoté and his plight, but we also connect and become emotionally attached overall. It’s surprisingly and astoundingly real and lived-in; fully developed, it all is. Will Forte is perfect as Avery, not only playing his out-of-his-element schlub-go-to with continued aplomb but also having genuine chemistry with a character who will be animated later. Same with his cousin-assistant, the perky Lana Condor of the To All the Boys trilogy; her bubbliness plays off Avery’s loser nature and the continued silence of Wile E. Coyote (how he does communicate is wonderfully done). The melding of the toon and real worlds is seamless and builds on itself, pulling in just about every expected Looney Tunes character in clever ways. Utterly fantastic use of Bugs. Bugs is voiced by Jeff Bergman, but Eric Bauza gives life to the vast majority of the rest. Additionally, John Cena is pretty much a living cartoon, always able to take the silliness of anything and ground it like it’s real and play it perfectly (Cena for Ernest!). His slimy, villainous lawyer is a fantastic foil for Forte and Coyote. Some side love for Luis Guzman’s judge.

Coyote vs Acme is the real deal, an amazing film that gives everything to its audience. It’s clear how much Green, Burch, Gunn, and Slater love and understand Looney Tunes. Laughs are often and loud, earned and slipping right into the classic shorts. It’s all incredibly clever, smartly done, and surprising. I’ll admit, sometimes the mixture of CG 3D animation that replicates the 2nd hand-drawn is occasionally uncanny valley, but it mostly works, and any quick “oh that looks weird” is forgotten at the next gag that totally lands as hard as our titular toon falling off a cliff. It moves with an insane energy, blasting through the 1h40 minutes like a blink, feeling just as long as watching a handful of Looney Tunes in a row.

Coyote vs Acme is consistently entertaining from start to finish, earning real laughs consistently in an engaging, far-reaching story. It’s a real shame WB almost robbed th world of such a truly astounding film. To bury a bad movie is a sadness, as everything is someone’s favorite, but to try to hide one as damned great as Coytoe Vs Acme is a crime. But as is all the other deletions they’ve done over there, robbing creators and audiences of entertainment, payments, and residuals all give executives and their shareholders a few more coins in their Uncle Scrooge vaults. It’s a travesty. But at least Ketchup Entertainment has saved Dave Green’s film of Coyote Vs Acme. Show up Zavlof, and all the other greedy asses, but show up and give it your time and money. It needs your eyes to see, and your mouth to share the accolades it justly earned.

Looney Tunes’ Wile E.
