The world of pop culture zombies is nothing if not over-saturated. However, every now and then someone comes along with a fresh take on the horror subgenre. Whether it was Tom Savini doing a full color remake of Night of the Living Dead, or Zack Snyder allowing the undead to run in his version of Dawn of the Dead, there have been few successful attempts to freshen up the rather stale threat of flesh-eating zombies. In 2016, Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho did just that with the release of Train to Busan, and its animated prequel, Seoul Station. His zombies were ferocious, unrelenting, and came with their own unique set of rules for survivors to adapt to. This film universe got another release in 2020 with Yeon Sang-ho’s sequel, Peninsula. When the announcement dropped about his 2026 film, Colony, most fans assumed it would be another trip to an already sufficiently explored reality. To our delightful surprise, Colony is something different and perhaps even more.<\/p>\n

Colony is set within a business tower in South Korea. The lower floors serve as restaurants and shops while upper floors contain offices and conference halls. It’s unfortunately also the target of a bio-terrorism attack. When a scorned scientist injects his former business partner with his own experimental concoction as both a test, and a form of revenge, Colony immediately kicks into high gear. The resulting \u201czombie\u201d outbreak harbors some of the expected tropes… Mostly the biting parts. Colony separates itself from the rest of the subgenre by giving the infected an interconnected hive mind and the ability to learn and gain new behaviors over time. With a disgustingly slimy horde threatening all of the residents within the tower, things take a turn for the worse when the outside world isolates the building and prevents anyone from entering or leaving. As the survivor count drops, the Colony grows, and the likelihood of anyone making it out alive narrows.<\/p>\n

A mad scientist using his former company’s research to unleash a nightmare scenario on a group of unsuspecting citizens is enough to make the Resident Evil franchise blush. With Zack Cregger set to release a reboot of the aforementioned game franchise, anyone who’s a fan of the series will find themselves right at home with Colony’s premise, looming threat, and one on-screen villain in particular. It’s the perfect film to watch for movie goers as RE looms on the horizon. [Rec] \/ Quarantine fans will also appreciate the film primarily taking place within one building. There’s plenty here to love for people who seek something fresh, yet familiar. Make no mistake though, as Colony is much more than a film that gives nod to previous work within zombie cinema. It provides us with a brand new approach to a viral outbreak with enough original elements to make it a cinematic win for Yeon Sang-ho and his creative team. While not connected to his previous work, Colony can either stand alone as a fantastic horror offering or serve as a starting point for future storytelling opportunities. The film’s lore is a solid foundation for a whole new series of interconnected projects, should Yeon Sang-ho choose.<\/p>\n

It’s gooey, gross, and gushing with charm. Colony is a horror film that delivers a solid performance from every actor, showcases the talent of a proud effects team, and a horde that’s more unique than any cinematic threat I’ve seen in horror recently. Colony isn’t as gore focused as most other films that feature the walking dead, but it still finds a way to make the audience long for a shower after seeing it. Simply put, this is one fun creature feature that shouldn’t go overlooked. This entry is another must-see for anyone that’s been loving the steady stream of horror that’s been released out of South Korea this last decade or so, and it can stand proud next to Yeon Sang-ho’s Train to Busan. With enough kills, twists, and human drama to keep you engaged from beginning to end, Colony is worth every horror fan’s time. At the time of this publication, you can catch a showing of Colony at participating theaters. We can more than likely expect a physical release in the future from the fine folks over at Well Go USA. If you don’t catch this one now, be sure to catch it later at your earliest convenience. You won’t be disappointed.<\/p>\n
