Not the right fish and the right wine (whatever that is; all wine pretty much tastes the same to me) connection, but more like a damned good burger and the perfect beer to wash it down. It’s a meaty, solid meal you enjoy with friends for a loud, fun night. That’s The Last Boy Scout. Tony Scott’s just heavy enough, sweaty, incredibly-well shot action flicks with Shane Black’s quippy buddy-cop dynamics, with a knowing, satirical sense of humor and storytelling tropes. However, since this is Scott and Black, more than a tad misogynistic, where all women are shrews, skin, or some mixture, an aspect that might not sit as well but has to be mentioned. Outside of th where everyone knows what we’ve got: a well-done piece of entertainment that hits the right buttons for a nearly guilty-pleasure picture.

Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans are a Shane Black mismatched butting-heads-to-buddies duo (see also Lethal Weapon, The Nice Guys, & Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang). Willis is a depressed private investigator, a former Secret Service officer fired for protecting a young woman from a lecherous governor. His life is in shambles. His wife and kid, played by screen queen Danielle Harris of four Halloween films, hate him; he keeps running into cops who begrudgingly deal with him. When his wife’s boyfriend blows up, he follows a trail to Halle Berry’s stripper and her former pro-football quarterback boyfriend, played by Damian Wayans. Well, things come to things; the men become partners to unravel a murderous conspiracy. The plot is noir, with 80/90s excess violence and machismo. Chandler on cocaine. It’s a conspiracy. And of course, it goes RIGHT TO THE TOP! Of both government things and football!

It’s a lot of fun. The guys have great chemistry, with Willis working through the curmundgeon with morals he’s known for, and Wayans in a more dramatic role. Well, at least less outwardly comic. It’s semi-comedy; if you know Shane Black, you know his style, but in the “oh my, this is insane” way, with the beats and the banter. The action beats are well done, and the whole thing moves. It’s not Die Hard special, but it’s a good ride. In other performances, Danielle Harris handles a bigger part than I expected, and I loved Taylor Negron’s head henchman.

I want to point out something that I normally mark as a complaint that works here: the “light that doesn’t light anything” thing. I’m always driven nuts by the “dammit, turn on the lights or find some that actually light the room, this is unnatural.” But darn if it didn’t actually land well here. Thank you, cinematographer Ward Russell, who worked with Scott a few times, for using it to help the tone rather than pull away, lending it a noir quality. Tony Scott has always had this touch; look at Crimson Tide or The Hunger, especially here. I especially love th the opening rain-soaked football game. Beautiful. This gives The Last Boy Scout something extra. Additionally, the sun-sweat LA of the day scenes creates a great reversal. Scott loves filling the frame with dirt, sweat, and lived-in production design in down-and-dirty worlds. As noted above, the film is Shane Black bigger-than-life and quippy, but it all comes together well.

I’m not going to call The Last Boy Scout a great film or a top pick for Willis, Black, Wayans, or Scott, but it’s a solidly done early-90s crime thriller. The buddy-not-actually-cop dynamic between Willis and Wayans works with Black’s specific banter; it looks fantastic and is a good time overall.

The Packaging and Presentation

Arrow puts The Last Boy Scout and the features on a single disc: your choice of 4k UHD or Blu-ray. They are honest in their assessment, and they enjoy the film. So while they champion the fun and banter, they do get into the misogynistic streak in this and Scott/Black’s work. Fun to hear a conversation comparing Ridley and Tony (my take is similar to theirs: Ridley’s highs and lows are higher and lower, while Tony is far steadier across the board, leaning more toward macho crowd-pleasers). It comes less to “how they did this scene or that” and more to vibes and some script notes (Willis’s rewrite insistances).

And Then Some

Shane Black talks about his career, how he got it going, all the trouble he had making this (he was going through a big bout of depression), and his look back. Great to hear him talk about finding the voices, getting that patter, and reflecting. Shane Black’s writing style works well with Tony Scott’s directorial vision to make for a highly entertaining film. The two leads, along with Danielle Harris, have great chemistry. While Lethal Weapon ended up with five films and a TV show, it’s too bad Last Boy Scout didn’t, as it would have been ripe for a sequel. Arrow puts together a great disc, finally providing features after years of bare-bones releases.

A private detective and a former football player have to work together to unravel a conspiracy in 1991’s The Last Boy Scout.
