While Hallowarrior is, at its core, a home invasion film that fits all the expected beats, writer-director Ben Sottak brings something special with a Halloween-tinged take. It doesn’t fully wow; it screams to be longer to flesh out some underwritten elements, but what is present is fully entertaining, with a set of great leads in Millie Shapiro and Ajani Russell, and a fantastic look. Hallowarrior is a nice treat with some nasty tricks, and a great way to discover what\u2019s new on Shudder<\/a> for our Halloween Horror Month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hallowarrior opens with a heartwarming reminder of days gone by. A lo-fi VHS Camcorder video of a family happily celebrating Halloween gives our title and the lead\u2019s credo: \u201cI\u2019m a Hallowarrior,\u201d says young Pumpkin. It won\u2019t last. Soon a pandemic will kill most people, including Pumpkin\u2019s family. Four years later, she\u2019s still keeping the Halloween spirit alive. Unfortunately, this year\u2019s masked visitors bring more tricks than treats. Though she\u2019s unprepared, Pumpkin holds her own against the first humans she\u2019s met in years, in fantastic ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

Millie Shapiro plays Pumpkin as a lonely sixteen-year-old survivor. She\u2019s astounding, playing a character very different from Charlie in Hereditary<\/a>. Bubbly but grounded, she has the enthusiasm of a kid who makes Halloween their personality, perpetually stuck at twelve, when the pandemic took her family and the world just after the holiday. She\u2019s also very practical and clear about how to survive, although she\u2019s reaching a breaking point. Toughness and sadness lie beneath the excitable exterior. Shapiro plays it incredibly well, working through the layers as she deals with the troubles as someone finally answers her call for trick-or-treaters.\u00a0<\/span>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Those who call? A family: Shannyn Sossamon<\/a>\u2019s Thalia, AJ Bowen<\/a>\u2019s Royce, and daughter Wendy, the earlier-mentioned Russell. As viewers of plenty of films like this, we know not to trust them. But Pumpkin hasn\u2019t seen what we\u2019ve seen; she\u2019s genuinely excited, looking right past the danger as Thalia clearly sets her up for harm. Luckily for Pumpkin, Wendy, who also loves to wear a mask and seems to enjoy the holiday from her past, feels a kinship with Pumpkin and turns against her found family to help Pumpkin. It\u2019s not long before Thalia vows to return with her extended \u201cfamily\u201d, who also like to wear masks to set the holiday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shapiro and Russell have great chemistry. While Shapiro is clearly our lead and grabs our attention, Russell also stands out. Unfortunately, the characterization of Sossamon of A Knight\u2019s Tale and Your\u00a0Next<\/a>\u2019s AJ Bowens’ \u201cparents\u201d drops quickly; they both do a good job balancing the friendly-or-villainous line. For a good few minutes, there\u2019s a \u201cwho to actually trust\u201d bit that brings a compelling fold to the narrative. But, sadly, it is lost quickly. So I wish the characters had a little more heft. Outside of Thalia and Royce, the rest of the family are just masked goons, ready to threaten violence and have it inflicted upon them. The family theme is pretty much abandoned after a single scene, leaving Thalia as a better villain on the table. More back-and-forth power dynamics between the girls and the family would be appreciated; it comes out a little quick and undercut, like a fun-size Twix compared to a full bar. On the flip side, at a mere 78 minutes, it cuts through the treacle and stays quick, dirty, and often nasty. In the end, I\u2019d rather come out wanting more than feeling stretched too thin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That quickness and nastiness is fantastic, though. The violence is plentiful and brutal, with extended sequences of massive pain. No death or attack is over with a thump and thud, but is held in longer shots and violent ends. Hallowarrior uses the holiday effectively, turning the tricks, treats, and Pumpkins\u2019 \u201chaunted house\u201d setup into a variety of clever uses, akin to a Halloween Home Alone.<\/a> And it all seems practical and is rather impressive. Blood flows plentifully! Yummy treats for us!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Said haunted house (aka Pumpkins\u2019 full-time home) looks wonderfully grimy and dilapidated (we\u2019re not going to expect a young teen to keep up with maintenance, right), and Sottak nails the right level of run-down, autumnal feels.\u00a0 He keeps the camera tight with setups that fit and work, bumping through with a rhythm. I loved the full look of it all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hallowarrior is a solid, if a tad small, home invasion flick with a wonderful Halloween edge and great moments of gore and action, held up by Millie Shapiro’s strong lead performance. If the worst thing I can say is I wanted more, that\u2019s a good thing overall. It’s quick and nasty, with a great-looking world and Shapiro showing great chops. Meet the Hallowarrior on Shudder<\/a> starting October 16th.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
