Back to the Past is a martial arts fantasy film that blends science fiction with historical fiction in a beautifully entertaining fashion. It’s a follow up to a hit Chinese television series called A Step into the Past. The show followed the heroic exploits of Hong Siu-lung, a character who’s chosen to participate in a time-traveling experiment after he saves the life of a brilliant scientist. A Step into the Past ran for forty episodes and ended in December of 2001. With the kind of charm one finds in an episode of Dr. Who, the show is as unique as it is entertaining. Now, over twenty years after its end, the story of Hong, the man trapped in the past, gets the kind of rare send-off most fans of other franchises only dream of experiencing.

Hong, now older and with a family of his own, finds himself living a peaceful life. That is until a small militia storms the facility that housed the very time machine that sent him two thousand years into the past. With tech and weaponry two decades beyond anything Hong’s ever encountered, the well armed group travel to the Qin dynasty to replace the royalty, and shape history to their whim in the process. Audiences can look forward to a spectacle that looks like Dynasty Warriors meets Call of Duty, with machine guns and grenades mowing down soldiers who’s horses can’t outrun the high tech motorcycles the film’s threat brought with them. The very concept feels like someone’s kid mashed together their best idea since dinosaurs on a spaceship, but it works thanks to its execution. I found myself thoroughly entertained from start to finish with this one.

Fans of the original series will be happy to see Louis Koo reprising his role as Hong for the first time in twenty five years. His performance got me invested into his character, which motivated me to look into the show after finishing the movie. While the entire cast played their roles straight, it was clear to me that Louis Koo was the happiest to be there and genuinely loves playing his character. It’s quite the spectacle to see a man living among the people of the Qin dynasty while sporting a t-shirt and occasionally confusing villagers with English phrases such as, “Good luck.” As much as Hong confuses the people he lives with by having the mannerisms of a man from the year 2000, he finds himself perplexed by the people and tech that arrive from 2020. He must now learn how to use guns and tech that are as foreign to him as they are of the people of 201 BCE in order to protect the family he’s established, and the history of the human race.

The film wraps up the narrative established during the 2000 / 2001 run of the television series and manages to catch the same whimsical tone that made it an original piece to begin with. With occasional flashbacks giving new audiences a look at scenes from the series, while those who enjoyed the show get a healthy dose of nostalgia. None of it is forced, which is rare when it comes to projects that are leaning on the success of earlier work. Back to the Past stands firm as a movie all on its own, while also bringing the legacy of A Step into the Past to a whole new generation of fans. This adaptation of Wong Yi’s novel “Back to the Qin Dynasty” offers a potential future for the franchise, and its hero, Hong. As an added bonus, viewers can look forward to an alternate ending that comes with an explanation about different decisions creating different universes. While it may be a concept that’s cashing in on pop culture’s current love affair with “multiversal” story telling, it could also be a hint of potential things to come. This franchise just might have more wind in its sails yet.

With enough martial arts combat, science fiction tech, and gorgeous set pieces to keep you entertained from start to finish, Back to the Past is the perfect follow up and conclusion to a beloved Chinese television series I’m happy to have stumbled upon. Be sure to catch this incredibly unique film as soon as you get the chance.
