It doesn’t go well for him, but it’s a blast for us in Frank Henenlotter’s 1990 cult flick FRANKENHOOKER. Now on 4k from Synapse Films.

The Film

Frank Henenlotter’s Frankenhooker is fuckin’ awesome. But what Henenlotter movie isn’t? Henenlotter is a man after my own severed heart. While Brain Damage is my favorite, Frankenhooker is the most straight-up fun. Frankenhooker, from 1990, is a pure energetic lightning bolt of B-movie greatness.

Frank Henenlotter, just before the second Basket Case (these were made back to back) takes his own twisted imagination (okay, with Fangoria editor, co-writer Robert Martin) to the well-told Frankenstein tale, updating it to grindhouse-era New York and environs.. Like, ugh, New Jersey. Jeffery Franken, an electrical worker with a “bioengineering” hobby with pets like a brain in a jar, is in love with his dearest, daring Elizabeth. Well, one bloody lawnmower accident and her body is in pieces. As much as Jeffrey might love her for her mind, a body would help. Crossing The Brain that Wouldn’t Die with Frankenstein, he hits up the slimy, pre-cleaned-up New York streets and picks up a slew of sex workers to pick and choose how Elizabeth 2 will be. From there, well, it’s complicated. “Super-crack” causes bodies to explode, the women are wild, and their body parts aren’t going to just sit back and be used. As she gets loose, Frankenhooker brings violent ends to the johns in glorious ways. Ridiculous and over-the-top in every way, it’s a blast.

James Lorinz is a solid lead, working with Henenlotter’s specific energy, but the oddities around him outpace him. Patty Mullins is freakin’ awesome as Elizabeth and the creation. The Penthouse Pet brings everything with an engaging, spirited performance. She’s 100% committed to a very physical performance. She matches and ups the energy that Henenlotter brings to his films. It’s too bad she didn’t pursue an acting career after this. Also awesome to see Louise Lassier as another unkempt horror mom, this time not eating green beans on the floor (Blood Rage rules!).

Gabe Bartolos’s special effects never look real, but they work with how big they are. The same goes for his work in the other Henenlotter films, which lean into the unreality of it all. The weirdness works, and I’m all for it. Plus, exploding bodies are always fun! It’s a cartoonish design, and I’m all for it.

Frankenhooker, written and directed by Frank Henenlotter, is another cult classic in his awesome stable. Patty Mullin’s expressive, all-in performance (the lip curl!). Big, bloody, and undeniably goofy, it’s a B-movie good time.

Packaging and Presentation

This edition of Frankenhooker is a slimmed-down version of the April 2026 special edition, as was done with Tag.
