But most of time their liberties can do good things for some franchises and properties. The “Lord of the Rings” movies are generally accepted in spite of the fact that they cut out whole characters, and invented sub-plots. And despite the authors hating them dearly, “Willy Wonka” and “Mary Poppins” ended up becoming iconic cinematic masterpieces. But then again we’ve also had “Daredevil,” “Batman & Robin,” “Green Lantern,” and “Elektra,” so you have to take the good with the bad.

Adaptations should be made with an appeal to the fan base and a broader audience, and though Hollywood needs to be called on their bullshit more times than not, listening to the fans for ideas is also a bad idea. It’s the worst idea possible. Fan boys should be given their fix, but never allowed behind the curtain to decide on the recipe. If so, we’ll have thirty fan boys going to war on including the Extended Universe in the new “Star Wars” movies, and arguing about who should play Green Lantern next. It’s an endless pool of petty, annoying shit. Placate them, but never give them power.

They Don’t Know What the Hell they Want, and They Won’t Admit It
The shit storm that came from the hype surrounding “Superman Returns” was so obnoxious, I consciously avoided any and all contact with fans for “Man of Steel,” save for a few close friends. Superman fans are as annoying as any fan base, but “Superman Returns” was the worst. Some people hated the lifted S sign, some loved it, some people thought the colors were too dark, some thought they weren’t dark enough, some wanted the large Kingdom Come S, while others wanted Brandon Routh to wear the classic Christopher Reeve costume again. People mocked Brandon Routh for being too young considering he was older than Reeve when he played Superman, and it was endless and irritating.

When “Iron Man” was in the works, John Favreau asked fans for suggestions and lo and behold the obnoxious storm continued. Some wanted the triangle chest insignia, some wanted the circle. When “Dredd” came out people mocked the production stills wishing Stallone would come back, considering “Judge Dredd” spent years being openly bashed by fans. Karl Urban was mocked for being too small, and then he came along and blew everyone away. Jason Momoa was mocked for being terrible as Conan, because Schwarzenneger’s performance was Ocar worthy, right? The truth is, if you get five fan boys together to make a movie, you’ll be waiting at least five years for it to be completed. And even then when they’ve finished the movie, they’ll leave angered and bitter.

They Have their own Golden Ideas
Once again the Fan Boys always think they know what’s best for their own fandom. Rather than ever give casting choices chances, they fly off the handle easily. I am guilty of many of those occurrences, but have tried to change my ways. I was not happy when Ben Affleck was cast as Batman, but I didn’t start a petition or hate site. And when Jonah Hill was cast in “21 Jump Street” I overreacted in my hatred about the casting, and ended up loving the film. Many people did react in hatred for Bryan Singer when he directed Superman. Fans also bashed James Bond candidates like Eric Bana claiming he was “too ugly” for the role, and started their own hate site for Daniel Craig when he signed on to play James Bond.

When he went on to star in three “Bond” films, people suddenly couldn’t remember why they were angry in the first place. Some even pretended they were for the idea all along. When Sam Raimi, a fan boy with his own golden ideas, gave Spider-Man Organic web shooters in his movie, someone actually started the infamous “No Organic Web Shooters” website in protest. The movies went on to gross boat loads of money, anyway. When Raimi was ousted for his unwatchable “Spider-Man 3,” fans were angry in spite of bashing the movie, and still weren’t happy with Marc Webb who came on to give Peter Parker his mechanical web shooters. They’re not happy until they have their hands in the pot, and even then they’re never happy.

They work together as well as a bag filled with angry, horny cats
Fan boys all think they know what’s best for their fandom, and they’ll do anything to prove it. It’s why we have fan films and fan fiction. Sure, the two aforementioned mediums can serve as great ways for fans to interact with their fandoms, but most of the time they’re intended to alter or change a fandom they think should change based on how they want it to. Fan boys will often unite to form a love for something, but they rarely work well with one another, or like each other. They have their favorite versions of said fandom, they bicker, and argue, and are hopelessly petty. They’ll even get in to a vicious fist fight if their knowledge on something is challenged or mocked. Instead of people setting it aside to enjoy one another’s company, many new friendships might split over casting decisions for a movie, or on a debate about who played the best Batman in the movies. It was Bale, bitches.

They’re notoriously, obnoxiously, ridiculously fickle, and disloyal
When we had a “Saw” movie coming in to theaters every single year, fans were angered at the fact that we had movies about nothing but torture and zero story. When the “Saw” movies finally ended, fans celebrated. “Paranormal Activity” took its place to release a hit movie every year. After the countless found footage films, fans suddenly started wishing they had “Saw” back. I mean, make up your minds. When Adam Green followed up his horror gore fest “Hatchet” with his PG-13 thriller “Spiral,” fans mocked Green for his downgrade rating, and accused him of selling out.

It only took “Frozen” and “Hatchet II” for his fans to come back to his side, again. Fans will turn on you whether you play ball or not. Hence why many film directors have avoided making movies based on comic books or on popular characters. It’s just a dead end of anger, resentment, and fan boys claiming they could do it better if ever given the chance. Fan boys are often dignified artists, until given a chance to remake or reboot a beloved property. Then suddenly they’re more than justified in destroying said property. Right, Rob Zombie?

They’re shameless Opportunists
Odds are if you’re working with a fan boy, not only will they offer their own ideas, but they’ll even try to sell you something they’ve created that’s original. In their minds. There’s nothing wrong with aspiring artists trying to sell people on their work, but often times whenever they go in to a company like Marvel or Image to work on something established, they’re intent on squeezing in their own agendas. Hence why Superman is an establishment puppet in “The Dark Knight Returns,” why Brit Reid is now a portly Jewish stoner in “The Green Hornet,” and why Nick Fury is now Mace Windu in “The Avengers.” They always have their bright ideas. Right, Rob Zombie?

I’m not saying Hollywood always knows what the hell they’re doing.
