The horrifying results change him forever.

Television offered me a dual look at the world of superheroes as I was growing up. FOX Kids would air Spider-Man the animated series and Batman the animated series every day after school. While Spider-Man was restricted to being nothing more than toy fuel, preventing Spider-Man from even punching his enemies, Batman the animated series didn’t hold back. With mature themes, Gothic settings, and villains straight out of a nightmare, the cartoon took a look at the gritty world of Batman and his often complex rogues gallery. Season one gave us three characters I’ve wanted to see on screen in live action for decades now. Man-Bat, Ventriloquist, and this article’s focal point, Clayface, were all on top of my list. If someone had told me that I’d not only get to see Clayface in live action, but in his own film, my childhood self would have been incredibly impatient. Now, thirty four years after being introduced to the character in the two part story “Feat of Clay”, I finally get this dark origin story on the big screen in DC Studios’ third cinematic release. Following Superman and Supergirl, Clayface offers a completely new tone in James Gunn’s growing cinematic universe… Horror.

Actor Tom Rhys Harries plays rising star Matt Hagen, a young and promising man with a world of opportunity before him. That all comes crashing down when he returns with his friend to their childhood home town of Gotham City where he meets a stunning young woman in a club, Mia. Ignoring his friend’s warning about who she’s associated with, Hagen takes her back to his place. The next morning he wakes up in bed to find himself surrounded by strangers. Mia’s lover, Markos Szabo, local mob boss, and his goons respond to Hagen’s apparent lack of respect by mutilating his face in an effort to prevent him from continuing his career as a movie star. With nobody in Gotham willing to stand against Szabo, Hagen is ultimately abandoned. He returns to his childhood home in the Gotham City slums and wallows until he learns about the efforts of Dr. Caitlyn Corr, a scientist who created nanite technology designed to replace conventional plastic surgery. After meeting up, she tells him that her work isn’t meant for human trials, but Hagen throws another warning to the wind and goes all in on the process of rebuilding his face, and his life. Initial results are stunning, with Matt looking as though nothing every happened to him. However, things soon slip into body horror territory when the nanites begin to respond to Hagen’s darker emotions and urge for revenge. You’ll see the film’s protagonist melt, morph, and modify his way through a tale of twisted justice, tragic loss, and violent vengeance in the best DC villain origin film since Joker.

Not unlike Demi Moore’s journey in 2024’s The Substance, Clayface offers up a grim glimpse of lost vanity and abandoned morals. The comparison is fitting, but completely surprising to see out of a comic book film. This movie is brought to us by writers Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, who bring both of their best elements to the project. While Flanagan is known for his work on such horror projects as Oculus, Doctor Sleep, and Midnight Mass, Amini’s work often revolves around uniquely whimsical tales of revenge such as Killshot, Drive and 47 Ronin. Together, with the directorial efforts of James Watkins, DC fans are given a blend of horror, organized crime, mad science, and aggressive retribution. With no caped crusader to be seen, our story takes place outside the view of any heroes who might rush in to save the day. Instead, Clayface is a standalone tale that’ll make you gain empathy for a brewing monster long before redemption becomes impossible. Overall, the film looks great save for a few moments where the CG needed a little more time to cook. Occasional visual hiccups can be overlooked though, as the majority of the transformations, practical effects, and on-screen violence, create a visual spectacle worthy of the big screen. The soundtrack is packed full of tone-appropriate cover songs and a cinematic score that helps drive home the tension as we see Matt Hagen’s increasingly grueling transmutations.

Clayface is the kind of film that proves that comic book fatigue only affects cinematic releases if they don’t adapt to a new tone. It breathes fresh air into the early days of DC Studios and shows that the pending cinematic universe has room for all kinds of storytelling. Much like their recent series, Lanterns, Clayface presents a more mature story within the same interconnected universe. While you may have taken your young ones to Superman and Supergirl, this one’s for the older audience. It doesn’t shy away from nudity, harsh language, or the kind of kill scenes that would make any slasher fan grin. The R rating is appropriately granted and allows for a broader audience to get a look at the world these creative minds are brewing. I can only imagine the kind of things we’ll see out of future Batman projects if his villains are given this kind of treatment. This has me crossing my fingers for those other childhood favorites that invoke horror and make the dark knight’s world that much more hair raising. Perhaps we’ll get to see Man-Bat and Ventriloquist at some point after all. Until then, I can proudly say that Clayface is the movie I couldn’t have seen coming, and couldn’t be happier to have seen. This one’s for the horror fans, the comic fans, and the curious movie goer who’s looking for something unique to see this Halloween season. Catch Clayface before Batman does, in theaters, and eventually on my movie wall.

Actor Matt Hagen undergoes an experimental transformation after he’s mutilated by a vengeful mob boss and his henchmen.
