This was also a period that saw the emergence of many of the conventions associated with erotic vampire films. The Velvet Vampire, directed by Stephanie Rothman, stands out not only as an early example of this wave of vampire cinema but also as a film that challenges the familiar image of the male vampire as predator. Move over, Count Dracula. Here, it’s Diane who does the seducing and draining. Of course, seductive female vampires were nothing new. Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, featuring a female vampire, predates Bram Stoker’s Dracula by about twenty-five years. But Rothman isn’t simply swapping a male vampire for a female one. In a genre where exploitation is practically part of the job description, she takes the audience’s expectations and turns them on their head.

If there’s one thing viewers can depend on in exploitation cinema, it’s boobs. Turn every sighting into a drinking game, and you’ll be dead before the credits roll. And The Velvet Vampire certainly delivers on that front. But Rothman is an equal-opportunity exploiter when it comes to nudity. The male lead does his fair share of prancing around naked, too. The camera is ultimately more interested in Diane’s role as predator than in the bodies of her prey. And for Diane, it hardly matters whether that prey is male or female.

The Velvet Vampire is not a film you go into expecting a grand plot or sweeping adventure. The screenplay, written by Rothman, Maurice Jules, and Charles S. Swartz, is relatively light on story. We never learn much about the characters’ backgrounds or even the full logic of Diane’s vampiric nature. Despite the limited character development, the cast seems to understand exactly what kind of film they’re making. Celeste Yarnall is a particular standout as Diane, embracing the character’s seductive nature without allowing her performance to devolve into camp. The narrative often seems less concerned with developing its characters than with finding opportunities for nudity and erotically charged encounters. One particularly memorable scene involves Diane sucking the venom out of Susan’s thigh after she’s bitten by a snake. Does this further the plot or develop the characters? Absolutely not. But does it make complete sense alongside every other strange moment in this film? Yes. Yes, it does.

Rothman’s decision to set the film in the desert, with much of the action unfolding under the blazing sun, further separates it from the familiar imagery of vampire cinema. The score only adds to the sense that we’re watching some kind of strange fever dream. We’re conditioned to fear what lurks in the darkness, but there’s something even more unsettling about horror that unfolds in broad daylight. There are no dark bedrooms or shadowy corners to hide in. Everything is exposed.

This movie is so delightfully weird, it’s hard not to be a little charmed by it. Even the ending plays with traditional vampire conventions, reversing the familiar roles of predator, victim, and rescuer. With hints of Nosferatu, the finale doesn’t shy away from the silly. Ultimately, The Velvet Vampire isn’t a film for every casual moviegoer, but for lovers of exploitation cinema, it’s not to be missed.

Lee and Susan, a young couple, meet a mysterious woman named Diane at an art exhibition.
