Protagonist Ottway is often plagued by visions of his dead wife, a woman who apparently died a slow and miserable death. It’s a passing Ottway himself has never gotten over, and never had the chance to mourn. Rather than confronting his misery and pretty much overcoming this terrible loss that left his life a hollow shell, he instead chooses to run away. When we first meet him, he’s war torn, exhausted and enters in to the tamed darkness of his oil rig where he prepares to commit suicide in the abyss of snow. Choosing instead to live, for reasons we can’t quite know deep down, he ends up leading his remaining group of co-workers from the plane wreck and in to the white wasteland before them.

The wreck is gruesome, and Ottway takes command seeing his friends off in to death and choosing to survive. Ottway is a man whose chosen to run for a long time, and now he can’t. He has to stand up and fight against the pain and the misery, and before he knows it, death is all around him, staring him in the face. “The Grey” looks like an action survival film on the surface, but there seems to be much more undertones beneath the script. Deep down “The Grey” is about a bunch of men whom have committed some truly heinous and unworthy deeds in their lives. Ottway explains that most of the men he works with are ex-cons, runaways, and general assholes. One man named Flannery suggests he made his girlfriend get an abortion, while another hotheaded co-worker named Diaz has a past that is set primarily in prison. Ottway attempted suicide. These are men who have been protected by their environment, and their faith for a very long time, living under the shield of their glowing cross we see loom over Ottway as he enters his factory.

And now these men are in a living purgatory where death is ready to grab them and pull them in to hell. They have to fight for survival and hopefully for their salvation. If their elements and potential starvation isn’t enough, they’re being stalked by a humongous group of wild wolves, all of whom are led by a gigantic Alpha Wolf, as black as coal who gazes at their fires with devious intent. These wolves are the harbingers of these men’s sins ultimately, and they’re on a mission. The wolves are often an ambiguous lot who seem to pop up and spring from the depths of the snow, and frequently they’re more keen on dragging the men back to their dark den and mangling them rather than actually eating them whole. Ottway is a man who is prepared to fight for his survival just because his will to live has kicked in, and deep down he senses that there is simply no hope. These men are being punished for their crimes by nature and, in a sense, by something much more beyond reality.

Director Joe Carnahan has a dazzling eye for suspense and tension taking a very calm and collected picture of these men and their clinging to life. He focuses very intently on their drifting in to death and uses it as a way to make life seem so much more precious and worth claiming. And as the body count rises, much of what is behind their lives is unraveled and left a mystery. Perhaps these men have something to live for, or perhaps, just perhaps, every single man is an Ottway. They’ve experienced a horrific loss in their lives and have decided to run from their heartache and now find they have to stand up and face death in its face as it comes to them. Their only solace is their release of death through visions of their loved ones. All of whom may or may not be deceased. “The Grey” has been criticized for an abrupt climax, but it’s the most resolved climax of all time. Ottway faces down death and will discover if he’s going to continue fighting on for the rest of his life, or let death overtake him.

Featured in the Blu-Ray is a Commentary with Co-writer Director Joe Carnahan and Editors Roger Barton and Jason Hellmann who discuss the production and much controversial climax. There’s also a thirty minute reel of deleted scenes that focus in on Ottway’s visions of his wife, and more scenes of the men braving he wilderness. One of the most complex action thrillers of the last ten years, “The Grey” is a gut wrenching and brutally gruesome exploration of survival, death, and the potential that there’s nothing waiting for us except cold dark eyes, and bloodshed.

Buy It Now!

When Ottway and his group of oil workers board a very shaky and shifty airplane, the surviving group of men find themselves in the middle of a frozen tundra after a horrible storm brings down the entire plane.
