\"plaguetown0217092359917\"<\/a>Adding to the continued xenophobia themed horror sub-genre, “Plague Town” is a movie that acts as a form of torture on its movie viewing audience implementing some of the most absolutely irritating and obnoxious characters I’ve ever seen put to a horror film, ever. Director Gregory tries to bring us in at eye view on a family of travelers who are griping and bitching at one another with some issues that have yet to be resolved. But that attempt to add these warring characters to the fold of horrific freaks on the Irish countryside works against him as there isn’t a single sympathetic character in the lot.<\/p>\n

Even young Molly who has a background of mental illness isn’t even the least bit interesting as she does nothing but mope around as the family literally sits in a circle arguing back and forth. The suspension of disbelief being that they actually managed to get this far through the bickering. As fate would have it the family is stranded thanks to the oldest daughter Jessica and they end up on the tail end of a freak orgy, an Irish village cursed with psychotic children with a variety of deformities and the family ultimately learns to work together and get over their differences.\u00a0 No I’m just fucking with you, they continue to argue even in the face of uncertain death! And trust me, I prayed for their uncertain death.<\/p>\n

For a film with such a grit and atmosphere hearkening back to the Satanism horror flicks from the seventies, the overall production values behind “Plague Town” are quite rocky. Sometimes the audio is off kilter, sometimes the audio is god awful, and there are instances where co-star Jossyln DeCrosta seems to be having her dialogue dubbed by someone else. Dark Sky gives this movie a better treatment on DVD than it actually deserves, and through and through it’s just a rather tedious little genre entry that’s not even valuable for killing time. We have to endure endless scenes of our characters walking around in the dark with children giggling in the background and rather than run away, they run toward the noise in a vain attempt to help whoever is in trouble.<\/p>\n

And there are a lot of character elements that serve little to no purpose in the overall scheme of the story. Why is the focus on Molly’s mental health so important? Why is Jessica so adamant in her hatred for her sister even during stressful times? What is the ultimate purpose for this town? What are they really trying to accomplish? And why haven’t anyone else happened upon them if they’re near a major bus route for tourists? I never could quite grasp what they were going for here, and most of all I found myself drifting in and out wondering why even in the midst of gore, I was still so bored out of my mind. I originally saw most of this film on the god awful Chiller Channel here in American Cable Television and by all rights, it was a very deserving fate as “Plague Town” is a pretty bad movie that is never sure what story it’s trying to tell and never gauges out sympathies featuring a slew of annoying characters, and a narrative that goes absolutely nowhere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
