The versus titles are a niche in the Straight to DVD market, so Timpane is already ahead of the game with the sequel to his franchise which sees an innocent bystander fall to the clutches of a vampire attack only to be saved at the last minute by the Ninja clan who arrive in time to hunt the vamps, but not prevent our protagonist from becoming a vampire.

This time rather than a demonic warlord, they’re now faced with a dictatorial vampire prince who has his own clan of bloodsuckers that have it out for the ninja clan. I love how this sequel doesn’t have too much of a natural progression in terms of characters. The ninjas are still a team but they don’t consider themselves such so when we see them years later they’re still just strangers with similar powers who don’t trust one another. With the bigger budget we’re allowed better performers and Cory Okouchi really ties the film together bonding the teammates and going undercover to discover the powers of the ninja team.

He’s given quite an entertaining sub-plot as a man undergoing his transformation who is in love with his best friend and can’t tell her he’s turning in to an undead bloodsucker. There’s a real flair added to the production this time around giving the film the gimmicky novelty that the original film tried so hard to inject and couldn’t quite master enough. Here the characters are better defined and the story just makes much more sense. All the while Timpane makes some hilarious observations about vampires as Okouchi’s character often finds himself “covering the bases” when pondering on why these vampires don’t sparkle. Cory Okouchi is a newcomer who definitely has potential in this series, giving the ninjas an Asian edge it desperately requires.

Which is not to say the movie isn’t strong on its own as Timpane thankfully has dialed down on the pop culture riffs and seems more intent on carving out his own influences among his fan base rather than relying on his vast array of Tarantino one-liners and Kevin Smith winks to the camera. The series can only go up from here, and that’s if it’s willing to take steps in improving itself more and more rather than just relying on the same formula over and over again. There’s a real craving for versus films with today’s consumer, and Timpane found the right formula to feed that need. “Ninjas vs. Vampires” is a worthy sequel with a slick sense of action and horror that I wanted in a follow-up.

Director-Writer Justin Timpane is back and he’s bringing fanged fucks with him in the sequel to his highly entertaining “Ninjas vs. Zombies.” Except this time he’s armed with a bigger budget and a cast with more acting abilities this go around.
