I think my head would explode if I stumbled on to a Batman wannabe that channeled the tone of the Batman comic books. But, like every other Batman knock off, “James Batman” is a copyright infringing take off on the Adam West Batman series even including a variation of the iconic theme song. This version of Batman however is played as a buffoon by Filipino comedy star Dolphy who takes on the cape and cowl and makes Batman someone as immeasurably incompetent as Inspector Clouseau.

Throughout much of the movie, Batman and Bruce Wayne find themselves getting in to pickles, and somehow always coming out unscathed. Much of the adventures of Batman and Robin are played for laughs, even featuring a moment where Batman and Robin climb down the ledge of a tall building only for Batman to have his tights and pants pulled down. And upon the introduction of Batman and co-star James Bond, the two approach their government battling over who gets to speak first, pushing one another aside comically. “The Organization,” a crime syndicate interested in–you guessed it–world domination, spend most of the movie chasing after Batman and Bruce Wayne and can never quite catch him.

Meanwhile they employ facsimiles of The Penguin and Catwoman along with hooded female guards with noticeable cleavage. Much of “James Batman” is long and drawn out with much of its attempted comedy and slapstick falling flat and never quite landing its mark. The plot goes literally everywhere and there’s never an idea on whether we should take the villains seriously as play them for fools like Batman does. At least the head villain has a chair shaped like a hand that doubles as a weapon that can shoot lasers from its finger tips. That’s convenience. This isn’t the comedy spectacular it probably was considered back in the sixties because spoofing Batman during a time where Adam West was making Batman in to a joke already is a bit redundant. “James Batman” has a cool pairing of James Bond and the Dark Knight, but sadly with the wrong production crew behind it.

It would be a rare treat if one of the many Batman rip-offs from one of the many foreign countries would actually get Batman right.
