The Black Mass Actress Eva Hamilton Interview [Women in Horror Month 2024]

The Black Mass actress Eva Hamilton:

To start, please introduce yourself:
Hi, I’m Eva Hamilton. I’m an actress based in LA. I’ve always loved horror and am lucky to work consistently in the genre.

What is horror to you, what makes a work of art one in the horror genre?
To me horror is about survival, both in a literal and metaphorical sense. It’s about holding on to one’s sense of self no matter how many monsters you encounter along the way.

What made you want to work in horror?
I’ve always loved horror and I’ve always loved performing, so it honestly just kind of evolved organically. I’ve always been a fan of films that, horror or not, address some of the darker elements of the human condition.

What would you like your legacy to be in the genre (or elsewhere)?

I’m more focused on the work than any particular legacy, but the goal is to be a part of telling stories that truly make people feel. I know that sounds simple, but I’ve found it’s something you have to actively pursue.

What is Women in Horror Month to you and why is it still important this many years later?

Horror so often speaks to the female experience in a way that other genres may not always touch. Object and victim remain roles that society often pushes on women. Women in Horror Month is an acknowledgment of how much the genre has been shaped and guided by female performances and perspectives, both in front of and behind the camera.

What are you currently working on that you can tell us about?
Most recently I was in the true crime thriller The Black Mass, which was released last month. It’s directed by an amazing woman in horror, Devanny Pinn. I also just started production on Bringing the Law with another incredible female director, Scout Taylor-Compton, in her directorial debut.

Outside of film work, I’m the co-creator and star of Alana Darkchilde. Alana is a modern horror hostess with an eclectic and supernatural life, who spends her time interviewing horror movie villains and engaging with the genre community. Alana is part of a horror-comedy series in active development.
