Sinners (2025) [Halloween Horror Month 2025]

When a set of twins return to their hometown to start a juke joint, things quickly unravel, revealing hidden sins and supernatural threats.

Sinners delves into the complex relationship between past trauma, family legacy, and the pursuit of a better future. Blending rich historical drama, visceral supernatural horror, and profound cultural resonance, the film delivers a captivating, music-heavy story that raises intriguing ethical questions about faith and vice. The film, written and directed by Ryan Coogler, maintains a heavy, atmospheric tone despite its underlying themes of hope. Set in the 1930s Mississippi Delta, the narrative centers on twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, who return home using stolen money to establish a new juke joint for the local Black community. This endeavor becomes the flashpoint for the conflict, as their cousin Sammie’s transcendent blues music, meant to unite, unwittingly summons a greater evil. Coogler’s script moves quickly once the supernatural element is introduced, using the vibrant cultural heart of the juke joint to contrast sharply with its morbid confrontation. However, while it offers a compelling night of survival, its deeper themes, like power dynamics, the weight of cultural history, and the choices that define a soul, remain more contextualized than truly explored.

Michael B. Jordan leads the film with a standout, dual performance as the twin brothers, Smoke and Stack. Though biologically identical, Jordan instills them with two entirely distinct personalities that anchor the film’s emotional center: Stack, the more social and impulsive extrovert, and Smoke, the reserved and protective brother. His ability to shift seamlessly between their energies makes the sibling dynamic deeply compelling. Jordan brings a nuanced emotional physicality to both roles; small gestures of protective anxiety from Smoke clash with Stack’s easy, charming confidence. Miles Caton takes on his first major role as Sammie (aka Preacher Boy), the talented yet naive aspiring guitarist whose music is the film’s catalyst. Caton’s performance captures the unsettling mix of innocence and genuine musical talent that defines his character. He looks up to his cousins, but his desire to leave the small-town church life for the blues unknowingly attracts both spirits of the past/future and the vampire Remmick. His youthful energy and musical passion provide a clear emotional counterpoint to Jordan’s intense and charismatic twins.

Early scenes frame the Delta landscape through wide, humid, and sun-drenched shots, reinforcing the brothers’ desire for a clean slate. As the narrative tightens into the night, the direction shifts, focusing on the intimate, often claustrophobic confines of the juke joint. Tighter framing, calculated shadows, and tracking shots subtly hint at the unseen forces gathering outside before the full confrontation with Remmick and his vampires is revealed. These choices effectively build atmospheric tension, aligning the audience with the hope and subsequent terror of the Black community. The film’s music is undoubtedly one of its strongest elements, keeping the tone engaging even when the story takes sinister turns thanks to music composer Ludwig Goransson. The script doesn’t dwell on the horror of its events but instead uses the blues, the heart of the Delta setting, as a driving narrative force. The soundtrack complements this by using transcendent, soulful tones that are both deeply emotional and eerily effective, subtly reinforcing the spiritual power and cultural significance of the music. Sinners brings a powerful addition to the historical horror genre, and an emotionally charged ride with strong direction and masterful dual performances. Its exploration of family, culture, and autonomy is intriguing while balancing a character-driven survival story. The film manages to offer a spiritually immersive experience that brilliantly blends genres into a masterpiece.
