South Carolina Writer-Director Felicia Rivers [Women in Horror Month 2022]

Felicia Rivers is a writer, director with some serious art education in her arsenal of tools. She started Geechee One Films and is here to tell us a little bit more.

Please introduce yourself:
My name is Felicia Rivers and I am a independent filmmaker based out of Charleston, S.C.  I have been making film for almost 4 years now. My partner Isaac Hilton Jr. and I own Geechee One Films. We write, produce, direct, cast, and more. I also hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication with a concentration in Public Relations from Claflin University as well as an Associates degree in Accounting and another in Business Management from Miller Motte Technical College.

What is it that attracts you the horror genre for your chosen field of creative work?
I enjoy horror and thriller films as a fan so I also enjoy writing and producing films in that genre. I am a big movie fan as well. I grew up watching horror movies. My favorite films (even tho they arent really scary to me) are: Cabin Fever,  All the Final Destinations films, The House at The Left, Drag Me to Hell, and more.
What are your passions, cinematic or otherwise?
I am passionate about writing.  Both of my parents have nine brothers and sisters and my dad’s side my cousins are mostly nurses and military.  My mom’s side are mostly teachers. My dream has always been to be a writer.
Considering this is 2022, why do you think we still need a movement like Women in Horror Month?
Women in Horror Month is needed in order to celebrate women who love horror. More to push more visionaries to wanting to work on what excites them. We need this because we as women have came so far behind and in front of the camera.  Why not celebrate our endeavors and achievements?
What would you tell an up-and-coming creative in the world of horror who sees that being a woman/identifying as a woman as something that makes it so much more difficult at times?
With how the world is developing I feel everybody is more understanding of female directors in general. Women can write and produce some amazing work. We are here and we will make a noise.
What are your favorite bits of helpful advice that you have received about your work or your field?
You have to create content that you yourself enjoy. Dont be scared to try something new. Don’t be scared to lose. You need people in circle that motivate you when you win and when you lose.
What do you have coming soon that you can talk to us about?
We are dropping a sci FY thriller in May called “Lilith’s Ball”. Not telling to much but the lead Isiah gets to meet the devil which is played by Love and Hip Hop Miami’s own Nikki NATURAL.  He exchanges his soul to be like his happily married best friend.
What do you hope to leave behind in your legacy as an artist?
I hope that my movies live on. I am a mother of 5 so I have my kids acting in my projects too. Never know where my vision can lead.
