A woman with the mob on her trail goes on the run and jumps in the car of an innocent country store customer. As they run from wave after wave of assailants, her skills become clearer and it’s obvious something is going on.
Written by CJ Walley and directed by Shane Stanley, Double Threat is a fun 92 minutes ride that goes by fast and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Yeah, there are a few items that will bug some viewers, but putting those aside, this is an action film with some comedy and a lot of twists and turns. Tons goes on here, almost all of it on screen. The film takes its story, makes it interesting with fun characters and gets things going from the very start. There’s no wasted time here and the way the story is written and directed shows that the creative team behind this one knew what they had on hand, what they wanted to do with it, and how they wanted the final product to be. There is a fair amount of randomness here and bunch of entertaining fights.
Cast in the lead of Natasha is Danielle C. Ryan who does an excellent job here. She gives a take no prisoner approach to things, much like her character, and she makes the most out of her part here. She’s fun to watch, entertaining to go along with, and seems to have one heck of good time here. Her work really pulls the viewer in and her fighting skills will have those who love a good, badass lady wanting to see more of what she can do. Playing the traveling man who’s car she jumps in is Matthew Lawrence who plays very well along with her, giving a balance to her presence, more subdued at times, less in your face. Together they create a dynamic that is not fully logical, but works within the settings of the film. Playing the lead bad guy, the mafia dude with something to prove, is Kevin Joy. His way of playing the character is a bit annoying and smarmy, which while it makes him someone you don’t want to see more of, the choices are quite fitting for the part. The other cast members are mostly on point, most of them not getting much more than a fight here or a scene there. There’s a lot going on in this movie and the characters come and go fast, everyone involved looks to have understood their respective assignment.
The cinematography by Joel Layogan and the editing by Frank Reynolds and Shane Stanley bring the film together in a way that allows the viewer to see the action fully. The film has a good pace and the editing really brings scenes in at the right moments while still letting the action unfold clearly. There’s not a ton of quick cuts to the fight scenes and that is something that needs to be celebrated.
This one is a fun one folks! Double Threat is a film that knows what it wants and how to get there. It allows fight scenes to actually be visible and gives star Danielle C. Ryan the room to show her skills and be a badass. The cast overall is fun to watch and the story is easy enough to follow. This is a good Saturday evening with the peeps watching a film and having fun with its action and humor. Things escalate quickly at times here and while the action is full on, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Double Threat will be available on VOD starting June 3rd, 2022.
