I originally saw Brian Trenchard-Smith’s “Night of the Demons 2” before ever seeing Kevin Tenney’s original 1988 classic. It was a late night viewing on Cinemax that still remains burned in to my brain. Brian Trenchard-Smith fills in with Kevin Tenney offering up a sequel that’s just as good as the original “Night of the Demons.” Hell, I wouldn’t argue if you even insisted the sequel is better.

Night of the Demons (1988): Collector’s Edition [4K UHD/Blu-ray]
There aren’t many horror movies that I’d genuinely pass out for Halloween as party favors, but “Night of the Demons” is one of them. It’s low key one of the top five Halloween horror movies of all time. It is set on Halloween night, revolves around a disastrous Halloween party and even ends on a completely pointless but fun scene involving razor blades in candy. Kevin Tenney’s horror production is known for being a cheapie production that was constrained to filming in one setting and one setting only. Kevin Tenney is talented enough to where we can barely tell the difference turning the house that the whole movie is set in in to a veritable cauldron of pure terror.
Five Horror Movies with Great Soundtracks
While many love a good horror movie, a movie is only as good as the music that accompanies it. While some movies choose scores, some horror movies also implement a great soundtrack to go along with it. Often times that soundtrack becomes a recurring element throughout the film, enhancing the experience two fold. A good soundtrack is very important, and these are five great horror films with some Great soundtracks.
Mary Had a Little Lamb (2023)
It seems like every other year there’s an attempt to deliver fans a new “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” and like clockwork here comes “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Centered on Uncork’d Entertainment’s initiative to offer genre films based on classic nursery rhymes, director Jason Arber and writer Harry Boxley really don’t do anything new or creative with the whole gimmick that his movie is centered on. It’s, in a nutshell, a beat for beat, condensed remake of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” but dropped down in to the UK.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
“Hocus Pocus” has managed to become a huge cult classic since its initially slept on release in 1993. When you release a Halloween movie in the middle of the summer, you kind of expect the movie to flop. But years since its release, movie fans alike have caught on allowing it become an absolute classic. And I for one love “Hocus Pocus.” I loved it since I first saw it on VHS back in 1994. “Hocus Pocus 2” seemed like a far fetched idea until 2022 when there seemed to be potential for a follow up. With “Hocus Pocus 2” you kind of have to meet it halfway. It’s a follow up but it’s different than the original movie. That doesn’t make it bad, it just makes it a different movie and experience altogether.
Storm (2023) [Beyond Fest 2023]
Apparently “Storm” is something of a proof of concept as much as it is a short horror film and I have to say that I love where it’s headed. Director Lena Tsodykovskaya is a wonderful visual director who is capable of creating something of a really polished horror film. “Storm” is such a great meta-horror movie that I was sucked in from the opening. I don’t know if this concept can be stretched in to a ninety minute horror film, but for what it is “Storm” is a well realized and engaging horror film that smashes the fourth wall.
Five More Promised Sequels That Never Happened
End of the movie stingers can be a double edged sword. They can be the promise of huge, great things to come. But often times if and when we never get a sequel or promised follow up, we’re always left hanging and begging studios for some kind of resolution or extension of a story. Nine times out of ten, the studios don’t oblige movie fans. These days studios are getting bolder, offering end of movie, mid-credit, and or post credit scenes, many of which promise new developments for sequels or spin offs. Sometimes they’re great and sometimes… they amount to nothing.
