They released him, now if only they knew how to put him back. After releasing something they were not ready for, workers have to team up with a fighting father and son duo to figure out how to win this battle and put the evil back where it came from.
Written and directed by Chris Baugh based on their story with Brendan Mullin, Boys from County Hell is a fun romp into the Irish countryside where friends unleash an evil that may be connected to Bram Stoker. The film takes this and makes it into something that is entertaining to watch and the story is both easily to follow and something that keeps the attention. The story is fairly simple, but developed in such a way that the twists and turns work. It’s not exactly full of surprises, but it’s an entertaining time, so it works overall.
The cast here look and come off as a group of people who know each other well and who do what they must to take care of their community. They work so well together that it’s hard to pinpoint a performance that is better than the others, here everyone gave what they had and made their parts work as solo characters and as part of the group. Some do come off funnier while others come off more serious, but in the grand scheme of things in this film, it works. One fun performance must be noted that of Morgan C Jones, who even hours or a few days after watching the film, his work is still clear in memory, so watch for him.
As it is a horror film, there has to be special effects and of course, they are good here. The work by Millenium FX and the effects team is fantastic here with great blood effects, a really good creature, and some other fun goodies here and there. The blood looks great, a nice dark shade that will make horror fans happy and that creature/being works perfectly within the story. Without giving too much away, this is film knows when to show the goods and when to withhold them to make the effects even more impactful. It may not be a gorefest, but the effects are still fun.
Boys from County Hell is a fun film that is entertaining throughout, giving the viewer what they came for including some blood, some laughs, and a good story. It’s a good one to watch on a random evening with friends (once that’s possible again) or even on one’s own.
