Two high school girls living together and going from part time job to part time job do what they can to hide their true identity: Hired killers working for an agency.
Written and directed by Yugo Sakamoto, Baby Assassins is a fun action comedy where two teenage girls not only get to lead the film, but they also get to kick much behinds in their work, killing a few bad guys, getting in a few fights, arguing with each other, but eventually becoming better matches than expected. The film takes its premise and fills it with fun, some silliness, and some great fight sequences. The story is fairly simple, but the twists and turns make it more than just the sum of its parts. This is the kind of action comedy that makes this viewer want to come back for more.
The cast here is led by Akari Takaishi as Chisato and Saori Izawa as Mahiro, giving good performances and clearly having fun face off with each other, teaming up, and just kicking behinds all over the place. The two of them make the film what it is, giving it personality and a whole lot more. They are fun to watch and their enjoyment of the proceeding is infectuous. They make the film what it is. Yeah, the story and direction are good, but these two are the reason to watch the film. Now, the rest of the cast is also fun to watch with a few stand outs who really bring it, such as Yukina Fukushima, Yasukaze Motomiya, and Mone Akitani.
Another stand out aspect of the film is the fight choreography and the action overall. Action director Kensuke Sonomura really brings out the best out of the leads and a few others in the fight sequences such as the fight in the corner store. The film here is very much action oriented and their work shows that the production wanted it to be well-done and a lot of fun. Working with the action and the story is the cinematography by Moritada Iju and the editing by writer/director Yugo Sakamoto bringing it all to the viewer in clear sequences and allowing the viewer to see what is going on, a rare concept lately, and letting them really enjoy the fight and action sequences.
Baby Assassins is a fun action comedy that brings out 2 stars worth watching out for. The fight sequences are well done and what is in-between them is entertaining, creating a fun film through and through. This is not a serious film and it knows it, but it also knows it’s here to deliver on the action and it does so in great quantity.
Baby Assassins is playing exclusively on the martial arts streaming service Hi-YAH! Starting July 22, before hitting Digital, Blu-ray™ and DVD August 16 from Well Go USA.
