A very religious couple books a room in a quaint B&B for their honeymoon and to finally consummate their marriage. Once arrived there, things are a bit more extreme than they expected.
Written and directed by Ruth Pickett, The Honeymoon is anything but subtle and that works for it. The sex den these newly wed land into is just perfect and hilarious given their expectations. The way she uses these newlyweds in comparison with the lady who keeps the B&B works on the humor side and also as a bit of a message on society’s divide in terms of sexuality and many other subjects. Here she uses this mostly for laughs but it works on many other levels. The film’s subject is a bit ridiculous, but the humor makes it quite something. The humor here is rather in your face and uses sex a lot for laughs, but as people living a society where sex is taboo still, this works to bring the funny and make the film quite entertaining.
The cast for this short is just 3 people and their chemistry is perfect. In the parts of the newlyweds are Sophie Pelham and Richard Kiess and they make for the perfect sexually repressed people. Playing against them is Abi Roberts as the dominatrix/B&B owner with extra advantages. She plays her as openly sexual as can be without falling into porn. They play against each other in a way that makes every interaction funny and entertaining. Watching them all just not understand each other is something to be seen.
The film here has a very interesting décor and set designs. To be blunt, it went for the more dicks the better. There are dicks everywhere. The sexuality of the B&B owner is loud and clear and the décor makes it even more evident that she was not expecting the super repressed honeymooners. The set makes use of what looks like to be a real house and decks it out as a sex dungeon from a sort of porn parody. The film uses this to add to the humor and misunderstandings which leads to even funnier situations.
The Honeymoon is one of those shorts that packs a lot in its short runtime and makes the most of its location and situation. It’s basically hilarious with its play on people’s repression and what they may or may not know in life. The way the characters are played is exactly what the story needs and works well with the type of humor in the film. The Honeymoon is a hilarious parody on sex comedies and fish out of water situations. One that takes everything as far as they can go and does so with great effect.
