Five Horror Anthologies that Deserve Renewed Interest
After a lull for many, many years, the horror anthology has made a roaring comeback and is once again a common place for the horror movie genre. Television has embraced the anthology for short form storytelling, while modern horror filmmakers have utilized the format to give a platform and exposure to indie filmmakers around the world anxious for an audience.
With new anthologies premiering this year (10/31 Part II, V/H/S/94, Fear Street, et al.), be sure to look for these five great anthology horror films deserving of a big audience and fan following.
Daylight’s End (2016)
Director William Kaufman’s “Daylight’s End” is “30 Days of Night,” meets “Dawn 04” with “Assault on Precinct 13” thrown in for good measure. Sadly, while it’s nowhere near the masterpiece the aforementioned Carpenter film is, it’s silly, goofy, occasionally clumsy, fun late night movie fodder. In the heydays of cable television I could picture sneaking out of bed, and checking this out on one of the premium movie channels at three in the morning.
Five Great Analog Horrors You Can Watch After “V/H/S94”
“V/H/S/94” is finally out and streaming on Shudder, and it’s a fantastic reboot. It comes at a great time where Analog and found footage horror has garnered a small resurgence that promises to grow once everyone’s seen the found footage reboot. Analog Horror is trending on Youtube these days with visual artists and animators of all kinds delivering scary, weird, or bizarre videos that unfold for us a spooky alternate universe horror story.
With so many out there, these are my five favorite.
Stalker (2021) [Shriekfest 2021]
Andy moves to Los Angeles after a bad breakup, then meets a cute girl in a bar who takes him home by way of rideshare. The driver finds his way into the same bar and they strike up a friendship in an attempt to not be lonely in LA. Soon after, Andy finds out he has a stalker who will stop at nothing to ruin his life.
Terror Eyes (2021) [Shriekfest 2021]
A famous online prankster goes on a trip with his girlfriend and a friend where he intents on proposing. As things go on, something definitely not right is going on. As things escalate, the party responsible may not be who they expect.
Demons I & II: Special Limited Edition [Blu-ray]
Regarded by many horror fans as one of the greatest horror movies of the eighties, and one of the greatest Italian splatterfests, “Demons” has carved a larger than life reputation in horror cinema, even in spite of its messy sequel line up. Lamberto Bava’s “Demons” is the essence of punk rock horror, a movie so unabashedly chaotic, violent, and gruesome, but one also packing a sense of mysticism. Its sequel is a pretty awesome follow up that repeats the original’s formula, but brings it in to a new arena where humans are hopelessly trapped.
