I’m still waiting for someone to deliver on an epic fantasy horror movie where teddy bears defend their masters against monsters under the bed, or from the closet. Tyler Novo’s two minute short comes painfully close to the premise and I’d love to see more of it down the road.
For a movie that only runs for a little over two minutes, it teems with mythology and epic potential, taking us in to the battle grounds of a big war. The teddy bears have defended the land against monsters for years, apparently. In this short we view as a warrior teddy faces down a large monster that begins to challenge its devotion to its master. Through some sort of ancient magical teddy being, we get the sense of their duty to their owners, and their commitments to the cause.
And the battle rages on. “Mean Teddies” garners some excellent animation that unfolds the land and world that the teddy bears stems from, and really pictures the never ending war that continues ensuing in dream land. It’s nice to know that even the tamest teddy can be a bad ass warrior on his home turf, and can inflict pain in a bloody battle. Tyler Novo realizes such an amazing world, and fantastic premise that I’d love to see so much more of this concept very soon. “Mean Teddies” is a great Amuse-bouche crying out for an epic series.
