I should point out that I’m a big “Friday the 13th” fan. I’ve seen every movie in the series a thousand times and used to rewatch my “Jason Lives” VHS so much it eventually broke. One of the finer points of the movie series is that it’s filled with plot holes and inconsistencies that add to the charm rather than detract from it. The premise for the series always amounts to a lot of fun and some laugh out loud, or awkward moments. Here are but a few.
What are some of your favorite “Friday the 13th” moments? Let us know in the comments!
5. Violet pops and locks
One of the things I love about the eighties is that when hip hop and breakdancing became mainstream, pretty much everyone thought they could pursue a career in either one. So often times we got scenes like that one in “Teen Witch,” and Violet popping and locking. In “A New Beginning” as the stuttering guy hits on his dormmate during “A Place in the Sun,” Violet spends her time in her room popping and locking to music. Not only is the scene incredibly awkward, but you almost thank pseudo-Jason for putting her out of her misery.
4. Jason has a Press Agent…?
In “A New Beginning” we view one of the characters looking through a series of news clippings of Jason Voorhees, and there’s even a news clipping with a close up picture of Jason in all his glory. I would love to know what poor sucker was talked in to tracking down and taking a picture of Jason and then lived to tell about it. Or maybe Jason just has a good press agent? Maybe he sent pictures he took of himself a la Spider-Man?
3. Friday the 13th 3D’s bad 3D
Although Friday the 13th 3D gets a pass from a ton of fans, I enjoy it in spite of the awful 3D. I guess back in the days, with the 3D implemented, the effects were cool, but now it’s so ridiculous. From a victim’s eye shooting out of his head, a girl getting speared by an obviously guided above the camera, and a way too long scene involving a yo yo, it’s funny, but painfully awkward funny.
2. Port o Potty Serenade
Miguel Nunez Jr. always gets a pass for starring “Return of the Living Dead,” but his moment as character Demon, in “A New Beginning” is cringe inducingly funny. From his introduction, to his weird back and forth with his little brother Reggie, and his visit to a port o potty which ends with him serenading his girlfriend, who stands outside hearing him go squirt in the toilet. He dies an unnecessary, horrible death, but the scene is so hilarious it’s become a running joke with me and my fellow horror geeks. I also found it weird how Reggie introduces his middle aged counselor as his “woman”, and she just laughs it off. Little piss ant.
A scene that’s both incredibly weird, but laugh out loud funny, Crispin Glover as Jimmy is brought on to the dance floor in an effort to impress one of the new girls in the group. When the music is turned on to fast paced rock, Jimmy begins a dance that looks like an epileptic fit. Even the cast can barely contain their laughter, and director Joseph Zito doesn’t try to hide it.
