Sparks (2014)

Director David McCool’s short horror film is a nice and clever little interruption of reality, that explores the idea of alternate states and the paradoxes of time. McCool plays a man at his computer who gets a mysterious call, and is disturbed by a sudden power outage. In an effort to test out a new odd device in a socket, he is electrocuted, and awakens to learn he’s facing an enemy he never expected.

“Sparks” is a neat and clever little horror entry that works more toward building up to a massive explosion rather than spilling blood. The character in this short entry has suddenly become the victim of an odd anomaly, and there may be no way for him to resolve it without disastrous consequences. Director McCool is able to perfectly align much of the plot elements with one another to add logic to the sudden scares and ambiguity lurking in the shadows.

I was rather surprised at how meticulous McCool was toward the film and his general premise; he doesn’t spare a single detail and allows his universe to become one circle of events that seem coincidental, but really have reasoning behind them. But not in the ways you’d expect. In the end I found myself very entertained and very to curious to how this strange string of events would all come crashing down. Director McCool really has a sly horror short here for fans that appreciate this kind of unique take on fate and alternate paths in to darkness.
