If you pressed me about “X-Men Apocalypse” and asked what I thought of it, when pushed in to a corner as an X-Men fan, I’d reply with: Meh. It’s not “Batman v Superman” murky, and awful, but it’s by no means going to dethrone “Civil War” as the superhero showdown of the year. Bryan Singer is terrible, the X-Men Movies still haven’t given us a great iteration these characters deserve, and for some reason Professor X and Magneto are still given the most screen time and importance over everyone else.
That said while “Apocalypse” wasn’t a waste of time, it also opened the door for huge questions that never went answered. Here are five pressing questions I’d love for someone to answer to me. Do NOT keep reading if you’ve yet to see “X-Men Apocalypse.”
How Did Stryker Show Up?
Didn’t they hint Mystique Was Masquerading as Stryker at the end of “Days of Future’s Past”? When they discovered Logan in the water, we see Stryker had orange eyes like Mystique. So did Mystique just pose as Stryker for a moment and then disappear allowing the real Stryker to take over? Did she just help them find Logan and then walk off giving Styker the credit? Did she walk around as Stryker mixing everyone up while on the ship allowing for a bunch of wacky misunderstandings? Why didn’t the movie remotely clarify that for us?
How convenient was it that Pietro was going to the X-mansion just as it was exploding?
So Pietro decides at just the right moment to show up at the X-Mansion, and at just the right instance decides to talk to Professor X? That’s kind of far fetched, isn’t it? How did Pietro figure where to look for just about everyone at just the right split second? What if Pietro thought “Aw, I’ll check out Xavier tomorrow, I’m about to get high score on Ms. Pac-Man”? Everyone would be completely obliterated allowing for Apocalypse to achieve his plan, now wouldn’t he? It seems much too convenient.
Doesn’t the mansion have precautions that would prevent a massive explosion?
You figure with a massive mansion filled with a bunch of irresponsible teenagers, all of whom can shoot laser blasts, explode objects with their hands, shoot sparks, create fire, and have the potential to blow up a nation with a thought that Xavier would have precautions and fail safes to prevent the mansion from blowing up four times a day. It’s kind of irresponsible and hazardous for someone who’s been entrusted to care for a whole bustle of kids and teenagers.
What was Apocalypse Planning Again?
What was the master mutant planning on doing once he’d accomplished everything? I think he explains that he wants to… blow up the world and bring down all the structures and then rebuild it in his image. And then possess all of the mutants to follow him and rule as a master race. I think that’s about correct. But I was always so fuzzy as to why this powerful mutant needed four horsemen to protect him. And what did the four mutants represent of the four horsemen? I think it’s explained Magneto was Death, but what about the other trio?
If Apocalypse Could Help Mutants Expand Their Powers, does that mean Jean’s power was the Phoenix?
So throughout the movie, we’re told that Apocalypse can help mutants expand their powers. He makes Storm Stormier, he makes Psylocke Psylockier, he turns Angel in to Archangel and even expands Professor Xavier’s mind so much his hair can’t even stay on his head. So did he accidentally expand Jean Grey’s powers to introduce the phoenix? And how did Professor X know Jean had more power than he did, but Apocalypse didn’t? He’s not very smart of a bad guy, is he?
Did “Apocalypse” leave you with any questions? Let me know in the comments.
