No Control (2016)

One of the most polarizing political issues dividing American society involves gun ownership. Indeed, there appears to be little middle ground here: those seeking to increase the level of federal regulatory control on gun sales and ownership are unable to comprehend the arguments of those that see gun ownership as a basic constitutional freedom, and vice versa.

Jessica Solce’s documentary focuses much of its running time on two men that use the creative process to highlight their thoughts on the matter: artist Greg Bokor, who creates a huge pencil drawing of an AK-15 from a gallery exhibition that includes a set of erasers for viewers to effective wipe out the overpowering image of the weapon, and gun rights advocate Cody R. Wilson, who creates guns using 3-D printing and has shared this process via the Internet. The film also interviews a pair of Colorado state senators that lost their jobs via recall elections following their efforts to enact tougher gun control laws, along with those that helped coordinate the endeavor to vote these officials out of office.

“No Control” was shot in 2013, yet there is nothing dated in the sentiments expressed in this seemingly endless debate. Although this film breaks no new ground on the subject and will probably not change any minds, it nonetheless offers an invigorating consideration of both sides of this heated argument.
