Channing Tatum originally began his career being pegged as the dreamy bad boy who was mostly in romance movies. Over the course of his career, he’s also garnered an admirable sense of self-awareness never being afraid to poke fun at himself thus setting himself up as one of the big-time actors who love to make cameos in random movies. Tatum has popped up in many movies over the last ten years, including “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
Whether you like him or not, Tatum has offered up some surprising cameos over the years, here are my favorites.
Aaron – Haywire
As Aaron, Tatum has only a small handful of scenes playing an agent tasked with fetching secret agent Mallory Kane. Refusing to leave with him, he shocks her by splashing scolding hot coffee in her face, and beats her senseless, apparently intent on assassinating her. It’s only with the help of random restaurant goers does Mallory survive the attack beating Aaron senseless and escaping with her life. It’s a memorable and startling prologue to a painfully underrated action film.
Superman – Lego Batman
As Superman Tatum is hilarious offering up an interesting dynamic against Will Arnett’s Batman. Although Tatum is mainly a small supporting character in just two movies, he makes a considerably fun stamp on both movies. As a Superman geek it’s nice to see Tatum has fun with the role, while also allowing the character some good fun in both films as a part of this vast universe.
Tyler – Step Up 2 The Streets
“Step Up” was engineered to give Channing Tatum his big break and it worked wonders. By the time “Step Up 2” arrived, the studio brought in new characters, but Tatum was on the rise in popularity. Thankfully he returns for a small scene in “Step Up 2” to literally pass the torch to new protagonist Briana Evigan, as the pair basically provide some exposition about her frustration as a dancer, and then cap it off with a really cool dance off in the middle of the club. It’s a great exit for Tyler.
Jody Domergue – The Hateful Eight
“The Hateful Eight” is a meticulously crafted, tightly constructed chamber piece that’s set up like some kind of wonky off Broadway mystery. Tarantino opts for simplicity while also offering up one of his most overbearing and self important movies to date. The entire movie centered on bandits, and cowboys, and slaves is capped off with a blood soaked finale as the brother of violent bank thief Daisy Domergue emerges from under the floorboards, and he’s played by none other than Channing Tatum. It’s such a fun wild card bit of casting, for a movie that Tarantino likely spent five months assembling.
Himself – This is the End
One of the funniest cameos ever put to film, the star studded post apocalyptic horror comedy found comedian Danny McBride being cast out by his fellow survivors. Later in the movie he returns as the leader of a group of cannibalistic scavengers and brags about how he not only rules but has a gimp. The masked gimp is none other than Tatum who McBride brags about using as a sex toy. This scene is so random that is never fails to make me laugh, especially with McBride taking it in for all it’s worth. “I found him wandering on the freeway, I collected him and made him my b*tch, get off my dick. I call him “Channing Tate-yum.”
