It’s very interesting how the “Merry Christmas, Splat” winter tales compilation clocks in at under forty minutes, but really provides a good time. It’s four very entertaining and somewhat calming children’s tales, all of which inspire wonder, excitement, and really celebrate both winter, and Christmas.
Truthfully, “Merry Christmas, Splat!” is the only tale that features Christmas as a grand centerpiece, but anyone that appreciates the winter season will love the tales presented. My favorite of the foursome is “Owl Moon,” a wonderful story about a daughter and father becoming one with nature. When the girl’s father decides to go out in to the snowy wilderness to call the mythical Great Horned Owl, she learns about respecting and appreciating the treasures of nature, and how harrowing it can be. The tale is unfolded through great 2D animation, and really evokes a sense of awe within the setting.
There’s also “Snowflake Bentley” a part story, part biography about Wil Bentley, the photographer that mastered the art of photographing snowflakes. Seeing the beauty in their individual designs occurring out of mere serendipity, he managed to show the world a corner of nature not previously appreciated. His love for snow and nature ultimately took his life, but with the narration by Sean Astin, we’re able to appreciate his contribution to science and nature.
“Fletcher and the Snowflake Christmas” is about a Fox’s efforts to help Santa find him and his friends, as they prepare to burrow in to the snow for the season. Finally there’s the main feature, “Merry Christmas, Splat!” about a mischievous cat trying to do good deeds before he gets a visit from Santa, allowing him to get the presents he wants. It’s a fun and funny tale featuring the titular character that kids will love. The DVD garners a read along feature that highlights the words for younger audiences, and there’s a behind the scenes look at the creation of “Fletcher and the Snowflake Christmas.”
