Doctor: Having a clitoris at the bottom of your throat is better than having no clitoris at all.
Linda: That’s easy for you to say! Imagine having your balls on your ears!
Doctor: Well… then I could hear myself cumming!
You know it, you love it, you pretend not to know what it is in front of certain company, it’s “Deep Throat,” a movie that’s become so utterly famous that it’s also helped to define the oral sex technique that’s like average fellatio, but amps it up a notch. I won’t sit here and explain the difference between regular blow jobs, and deep throating, because I know that you know what the actual difference is, no matter how much you deny it in the end. “Deep Throat,” much like “Debbie Does Dallas,” is one of the porn classics that really go beyond its genre. This is a film that’s become a staple of pop culture and really did shake everyone up to their boots for the simple fact that it was a huge hit. And for the fact that the success for the film was less about the film’s quality, and more on the gravitas it brought with it to seedy movie theaters. I mean what’s not to like about it? It’s only an hour long, features hardcore sex scenes, the late great Linda Lovelace, and has a title that pretty much describes the entire plot.
And, there’s really not much else you need to know when grabbing a copy of it. You know that there will be a lot of folks basically giving it to one another in the deepest sense. “Deep Throat,” unlike the other legend “Debbie Does Dallas,” is a much more serious film than the previous. Even though the porn classics do have a sense of campy to it, “Deep Throat” has a much more complex story and attempts at actual acting. Damiano’s film rocketed Linda Lovelace to stardom and paved her as the most famous porn actress of all time, with Jenna Jameson close behind, and that’s due to the success and massive controversy surrounding this film. I won’t pretend this is some complex art film, but it is an entertaining little piece of trash that has a sense of appeal. Lovelace plays… Linda Lovelace, a woman who discovers that she is incapable of orgasming.
So, after attempts to find the man (she sleeps with fourteen men in a row, business as usual) who can give her the explosion she wants, she learns that the only way she can really orgasm is by giving deep oral sex as her G Spot is located deep in her throat, she’s told by her doctor… who examines her by sitting her on his couch, and spreading her legs open to make the discovery. Probably the most hilarious scene involves the doctor giving an unorthodox examination without medical equipment, or a proper medical office. Who knows if he’s even a doctor, the viewer will ask while laughing at this sequence. He then proceeds to test his theory by having her give him a blow job. Man, I have to become a doctor and try that on someone. Damiano’s film attempts an honest story amidst the hardcore sex scenes, and… hardcore sex scenes.
Lovelace as this sexually frustrated woman really doesn’t convince, but it’s moot once she strips down and rolls in the hay with men who are trying to get her to orgasm the way she’d like. And of course, she discovers she can indeed orgasm through her throat, and hilarity ensues. She goes to work for the doctor, and proceeds to perform “house calls” on unsuspecting men to get herself off. “Deep Throat” has a better sense of entertainment mainly because of the dialogue. Some of the one liner’s are so funny that it really does keep it from becoming an honest to goodness porn and holds it steadily in the area of high camp. Though not so energetic as “Debbie Does Dallas,” it’s much cleverer with a world that’s strictly a ridiculous fantasy from minute one. It’s interesting that both of the biggest porn movies of all time have really lived up to their hype. “Deep Throat” is an entertaining and funny little porn with an utterly original plot/plot device that’s worth the watch.
