Yet another of the Christmas favorites that faded away from television land, “ A Garfield Christmas” is a wonderful and often times hilarious look at Garfield’s ringing in the Christmas festivities with Jon and Odie. Garfield is taken out of his beloved home and to Jon Arbuckle’s old home to celebrate Christmas with his country bumpkin family. While there, we not only garner an insight in to Jon’s odd ball personality, but we also get to see how Garfield reacts to the relationships around him.
Most of the focus is put on Jon’s family this time around, as he surrounds himself with his passive mom, hard working farmer dad, goofy brother Doc Boy, and cranky grandmother. There’s some fun antics to be had with Jon and his family, as they put up the tree, and prepare for Christmas dinner, which involves Jon’s mom and grandmother going to war over spicing the gravy for the family. We also watch Odie build a present for his misunderstood friend, while Garfield is able to take a glimpse in to the more human side of the family they don’t reveal to one another.
In probably the most gut wrenching moment of any Christmas special, Jon’s grandmother sits with Garfield discussing her late husband, and how much she misses him, adding some explanation as to why she’s so quiet and alienated from everyone else in the family. It’s a tear soaked interlude to the very funny antics in the Arbuckle House. With wonderful musical numbers, and excellent animation, “A Garfield Christmas” is a breezy and fun look at the lazy cat and his holiday mishaps.
