Schlock Fish (2014)

Written and directed by Esteban Uribe, “Schlock Fish” really is something else. It’s the kind of movie you look back on with a fond chuckle and an eye roll because it’s just so damn silly. Director Uribe offers up his own twist on “Moby Dick” with a tale of revenge, a big fish, a lone fisherman, and a lot of dynamite. It’s the stuff classic tales are made of!

Olav Zanger (Kris Swinnen) lost his eye to a large schlock fish from the local lake on his birthday. Now he seeks out the fish to take his eye back and look for a reason to add purpose to his life as a fisherman. After training and training, and spearing his foot, he finally finds a way to get the fish back once and for all and garner sweet vindication. Kris Swinnen is the heart and soul of “Schlock Fish,” giving a fun and funny narration to what is a series of quirky and goofy events that find Olav trying to wreak havoc on his nemesis.

From eating bait, to going out on to the water with a suit made of sea weed, it’s all a series of quirky and eccentric events that will make the audience laugh, and occasionally cringe. I found “Schlock Fish” to be a fun bit of random comedy that didn’t try to change the world, and just sought out to take “Moby Dick” and turn it on its ear. Director Esteban Uribe is very talented, and I hope to see more from him in the future.
