Watch These Films (WTF) Shorts Block
There are a growing number of short films surrounding the concept of social media and Ashley Thomas runs wild with the concept. “Like Me” doesn’t have a narrative or much of a whole structure behind it, but it at least makes up for it with a punch of a final scene emphasized with some excellent make up.
A young woman discovers the dangers of attempting to cut her own bangs when one night at home with a few drinks prompts her to look for ways to engage with her audience. She then decides to cut her own hair with a new set of bangs.
There’s no real dialogue, nor is there is a huge narrative, but “Like Me” is a pretty good short that works thanks to its relatable premise, and the darkly satirical nature of the approach. Director Thomas works basically with her cat the entire time, a cat that ends up being the whole film’s key, much to my shock. Director Thomas has some good talent in front of and behind the screen, and she punctuates her memorable dark comedy with some pretty fantastic, albeit shocking, grue.
I’m not too sure if what unfolds is digital or traditional, but I was certainly shocked by the reveal. “Like Me” is certainly worthwhile as social satire commenting on how far some of us are willing to go to make it as social media influencers.
This year, The Chattanooga Film Festival runs from June 21st through 28th (June 21st – 23rd In-Person, and June 21st-28th Virtually).
