Crew B and Freddie Wright’s short film about a seemingly sentient hangman game is probably one of the more creative short horror films I’ve seen in a while. Normally directors are prone to sticking to the classic devices of a Ouija Board or other oddities, but director Wright sticks to an odd game of Hangman to paint the future. And surely enough it becomes a Pandora’s Box that doles out terrible fates.
Danny wakes up one morning to a raucous rude mail man, and decides to ease his frustration of an annoying awakening by passing the time with a game of hangman on his ipad. What Danny soon realizes is that the game is much more devious than he realizes as it not only begins spelling out his current situations, but also the future. You wouldn’t think watching a man in broad daylight playing a computer hangman game would be creepy, but director Freddie Wright composes the story well enough to make the game a valid threat.
Danny’s stumbling upon this sentient game seems almost like a curse, and he’s compelled to know more, the more the game writes up new puzzles to spell out grizzly messages. The question soon becomes if you could find out about the future, could you resist learning the fate of others? And who or what is controlling the game? Wright edits the shot to depict the hangman game unfolding before our eyes, and surely enough with every letter revealed, it brings us closer to a disturbing scrawling that will unfold whether Danny wants it to or not. Director Freddie Wright composes a very creative and eerie bit of life interrupted by a supernatural force, and it’s a definite must watch for folks that enjoy their horror with a clever twist.
