At three minutes in length there isn’t a ton of set up to “ATM” but it does have the particular feeling of a creepy past or SCP. The idea of a sentient ATM feels like something out of a dream but becomes a nightmare for a poor man one day. Director Ooullo’s experimental animated film is a mix of stop motion, absurdist humor and live action to form a tale about experiencing our wildest dreams and the whole idea of the sword of Damocles.
An older man goes to an ATM to take out a small sum of money but is coaxed by the seemingly cognizant ATM to take out more money. The acquisition has an effect on his appearance, and he begins taking more and more money. This, in turn, improves his appearance more, allowing for better circumstances. “ATM” ends on a considerably jarring note that will leave it up to interpretation from the audience. As the man ages he inevitably deteriorates in to food, but is it his reward for building bad karma?
Is it a statement about greed? Or is it something of a bleaker discussion about life? Is it comedy? Is it horror? “ATM” sure is a fascinating animated short.
