Director Derek and Dan Morrow’s short film “Comet” has potential to really be the next fun kids film about two unlikely friends. Made on a small budget, and a limited crew, “Comet” is a short claymation film with very limited budget qualities, but great potential. The classic tale of a visitor from another world stuck on Earth, the Morrow brothers manage to plant the seeds for a wonderful narrative that they hope will blossom in to a feature film.
Centered on a young boy who spends his days alone and wondering why he’s so different and has no friends, an unusual alien accidentally lands on Earth. Named Comet, the alien explores the vast landscape with confusion and curiosity, and the Morrow brothers play with the perception by depicting the alien as the normal entity. Depicting our world as a weird place, the alien Comet eventually stumbles upon the boy, and the two become friends.
Comet is a very uniquely designed character with a lot of room to really come to life on the screen with a bigger budget. I would love to see how far its powers can range, and what its entire journey was on Earth. I hope the Morrow brothers get the chance to turn this idea and short film in to a feature, or animated feature, as “Comet” could really become a classic kids film. It definitely works as an introduction, and left me wanting to know more about this world and these characters.
