Shopping in a Zombie Apocalypse (2013)

I really don’t care if it’s a commercial for Boost Mobile, “Shopping in a Zombie Apocalypse.” is a wicked start to what I hope will be a fun series of short films. Director Matt Devine depicts a brilliant vision of a world where consumerism is the order of the day, and the zombie apocalypse is only an obstacle in shopping for the bare necessities. The last time the zombie apocalypse looked this fun was in “Zombieland,” and I wouldn’t mind watching this unfold in to a feature film.

The set up is simple. After the end of the world, two very sexy young women Saff and Jen break in to a supermarket, and decide to look for some supplies, and have some fun in the mean time. With incredible music by Nicky Night Time, Saff smashes through the market on roller skates, short shorts, and performs some mean justice with a cricket bat, while her counterpart Jen watches in the front, dancing along to the music over the speakers. Devine’s directions is fluid and incredibly impressive, all the while creating a short zombie picture that also works as a music video.

The gray tinting along with the excellent close ups and action shots is marvelous and sucks you in to the fun, albeit demented experience, and there’s simply no beating the vicious gore, and fantastic zombie make up. Not to mention the head bashing and action shots that ensue. It’s tough to find directors that can unfold action the way Devine has here. “Shopping in a Zombie Apocalypse.” left me wanting more from these characters and director Devine. I’m all for drama and horror, but sometimes there’s nothing wrong with letting the good times roll with the zombie apocalypse, either.
