Technology has become such a humongous part of our everyday lives it’s now become a tool that we take for granted, and use without caution. It’s embedded in everything we do now, and because of that, we’re prone to broadcasting how stupid and absurd we can be to the outside world. Peter Huang’s short anthology entitled “5 Films About Technology” is a laugh out loud funny and realistic look at how five groups of people all end up committing some kind of ridiculous act with their own technology thanks to stupidity or circumstance.
Every story is interconnected through characters and every story is short but so hilarious. What’s remarkable about the movie, though is that the cast only have about thirty seconds to a minute to pull off their performances and everyone here are top notch. “Sunday With the Girls” is a great look at quality time with friends, “Sunday with Yourself” features a boffo involving pornhub, “Eww” finds an accidental selfie going viral, “Face Time” is a gross end to a self involved business woman, and “Geoffrey” is a one shot capper to the satire about looking up when you’re texting.
You have to enjoy how director Huang has a field day with satirizing the everyday pitfalls of technology while never thumbing its nose down at society. What’s even more entertaining is that every situation affects the following one, whether the characters realize it or not, exploring how connected society has become. Director Huang keeps his anthology moving at a brisk pace with stories that prop up the gags, and deliver them without a single fault. I’d love to see him approach this idea with a feature length format someday, but as a five minute comedy fix, it’s great, entertaining, and original.
