Following the Civil War, a young doctor is asked to join in uncle in a utopic village in the Arkansas. Once there, he slowly discovers that many secrets are protected by the locals and that crossing them is quite dangerous.

Honeycomb (2021) [Slamdance 2022]
It’s always thrilling when you can see the beginning of what you hope will be a long, seasoned career of filmmaking. Avalon Fast is a filmmaker that has immense promise, and it’s fascinating that she delivers a movie that’s so jarring and unnerving, and absolutely original. Director Fast has a great habit for making the audience uncomfortable, opening the film on a weird portrait of a woman in a honeycomb, and then contrasting it with the image of innocence with one of her characters lying along a serene field. From there, it only escalates.

A man with a violent now living a very quiet life must reconsider his stance and reconnect with a long-buried part of himself when the stakes change.
Back Rooms (2021)
“Back Rooms” was born from the digital age, among the 4Chan and Creepypasta realms. It’s a pocket within our world that is completely cut off from the rest of what we could rationally consider reality. It is a series of endless rooms and hallways that stretch for a nigh infinite space, all of which are typically a noxious yellow, completely void of any life, and filled with the annoying, deafening hum of florescent lights. I’m only vaguely familiar with the meme of the Back Rooms, but it’s been widely circulated and explored much in the vein of other digital legends like the Slenderman and Sirenhead.
Mediocrity and Peril at Action Park
Seth Porges’ fantastic documentary “Class Action Park” recently debuted on cable, prompting me to think back at the time I survived Action Park. I say survived, and not visited, because as a kid I had no idea how utterly absolutely dangerous and deadly the theme park had a reputation for being. On its surface it looked like a wonderful place to have some good summer time adventure, and the ads that played non-stop on television during the summer season made the place look amazing. But like “Itchy & Scratchy Land,” it was a death trap in disguise with horrendous hazards capable of maiming and or killing you.
Sans the robots, of course.
Firstness (2021)
A non-binary kid and their father work on finding themselves and each other in the hopes of living a better, more connected life together. While the father dates, the child strikes up a friendship with a grown man that makes some people worry.
The Last Matinee (2020)
A young woman replaces her father as projectionist at the theater. As her evening advances, patrons trickle in and settle down for a film, including one patron with less than good intentions.
